CUERO, Texas – The Cuero Police Department has asked the DPS Texas Rangers to review a fatal officer-involved shooting Sunday. It happened in the 400 block of W. Hamilton around 4:15 p.m. Police said they were called to that area regarding a disturbance involving a firearm. When officers confronted the suspect it quickly turned into a standoff in the middle of the roadway, authorities said.
The suspect ran off and police said the suspect fired his firearm in the direction of officers. That’s when one of the officers fired back hitting the suspect one time. The 44-year-old suspect was taken to Cuero Regional Hospital where he died.
Once the investigation is complete it will go to the DeWitt County District Attorney’s Office for a review by a grand jury. The officer involved is on administrative duties until the investigation is complete. Authorities did not release the name of the suspect who died.
