Sunny and cool for North Texas, rain mixed with some snow headed our way Tuesday

It's a chilly start this morning, as temperatures have fallen into the mid 20s to low 30s across north Texas. You also have a ton of frost on your windshields, so make sure you allow a little extra time pulling out of your driveways this morning.

Plenty of sunshine with seasonable highs today. Readings will top out in the mid fifties, with a light east wind.

By tonight, the first strong storm system of 2023 will be approaching north Texas and will impact all of Texas during the day tomorrow.

By this time tomorrow morning, widespread rain will be moving in from the southwest and continue through most of the day. Some thunder is also possible, especially south of I-20 by early afternoon. We might even see a mini squall line impacting parts of north Texas, but nothing severe is expected. One to two inches of welcome rain is on the way. This will take a big chunk in our 1.85 inch rainfall deficit at DFW airport.

Now, who will see a transition to all snow or a rain snow mix by afternoon and early evening? As of now, I'm thinking areas along and north of Interstate 30 stretching from Sulphur Springs to DFW to Weatherford, have a chance to see some snow by tomorrow afternoon and evening.

The transition from rain, to a rain snow mix, to all snow will happen from west to east starting in the afternoon, but some light accumulations of snow are possible north of a Sherman, to Denton, to Weatherford line. This is where some slick spots could develop on bridges and overpasses by late afternoon and evening. The heavier snow totals (3"-6") will be confined to the Winter Weather Advisory areas. These areas stretch from Thackerville, OK (Winstar Casino), to Bowie, TX to Graham, TX. This is where roads will become treacherous during the day tomorrow through noon Wednesday.

A slow warm up follows, in the mid 40s with sunshine Wednesday, near 50 on Thursday, upper 50s Friday, and near 60 for Saturday. But we're getting into the tail end of January now, and I'm going to be tracking a possible Arctic cold front that may spill some very cold air across north Texas starting late Sunday and lasting through most of next week but, will we see any precipitation with the Arctic air in place? Still days away, but climatologically speaking, the end of January through the first couple of weeks of February, always needs to be watched for wintry precipitation across the area.
