The Home of Two Redway Schoolteachers Knocked off Foundation During Earthquake

Two Redway elementary schoolteachers are struggling to deal with terrible damage to their home, moving, and storing their belongings after a recent earthquake.

Nicole Keenan, a local resident, created a GoFundMe page to assist two coworkers, Jim and Lara Garrison, whose Rio Dell home was damaged in the recent earthquakes. According to Keenan, the house was knocked off of its foundation and deemed uninhabitable.

“I am setting up this fundraiser hoping to remove some of the financial stress the Garrisons are [facing] and will face,” Keenan said. “Because their home is uninhabitable they are forced to move to a rental property and store all of their belongings for work to begin on their broken home.”

Keenan said the Garrisons are still in the process of finding out how much the repairs will cost, but Keenan set an initial goal of $20,000 for the fundraiser.

“The Garrisons are great people,” Keenan said. “They both serve our community as elementary school teachers with the Southern Humboldt School District, working at Redway Elementary. They are cherished by the students and staff alike. When we have assemblies at the school the Garrisons are met with the loudest cheers. They are truly loved.”

Looks like a large floor jack and heavy wooden blocks could remedy that and put it back onto it foundation? I’ve seen worse out in the hills… that wasn’t kiltered by an earthquake LOL!

An interesting internet page. A story about a GoFundMe request, with a box requesting donating to RHBB and another donating blood at the blood bank. If it wasn’t for the sheer naked capitalism of the advertisement of a law firm loading at the same time, it might be scary.

And what page?

There are quite different pages depending the device, softwear and source. In my case it was the GoFundMe, RHBB donation and the blood drive ad with only the law firm advert to balance (?) the non capitalism. Just unusual enough in a world trying to sell something all the time that it caught my attention. Nothing more.

We understand. You have no compassion for these teachers. And you don’t appreciate the value of this media, though you and your fellow misanthropes manage to spew your venom here every day.

Possibly naïve of me but I thought there was a compliment that we are part of such a supportive community that tries to work together for the common good–I mean, surely no one is anti the helping of blood banks, teachers whose home was damaged in a natural disaster, and the news site they use.

I have noticed that quite a few houses seem to have this type of issue due to the quake. I can’t understand how the house could do this unless the rim joist was so rotted and/or termite riddled that the whole perimeter failed. Did the J anchors just shear off? It does look like it could be slid back into position but that wouldn’t fix the rim joist.

The Garrisons are wonderful people and a tremendous asset to Redway Elementary School. They arrive early and leave late. The children love them and they are wonderful teaches. We are lucky to have them and they need our help. That’s what this GoFundMe is all about, neighbors helping neighbors. Give what you can and know that it will be graciously accepted and put to good use and know that every dollar received will be returned in kind to every child that passes through their classroom doors.

I’m just curious how long they’ve been teachers there?
