Portland leaders and leaders in Oregon's Asian American community mourned the loss of the victims of the Monterey Park mass shooting while still celebrating the Lunar New Year here.
Police there say a gunman killed 10 people at a ballroom dance studio during a Lunar New Year's celebration.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler tweeted his feelings on the shooting Sunday: "The mass shooting in Monterey Park is absolutely devastating. I am mourning the lives lost and am keeping close communications with Portland's Chinese American community as they celebrate the Lunar New Year. We must unite to stop gun violence."
Hundreds came out to the Milwaukie Community Center Sunday for the North Clackamas Parks and Recreation's first Lunar New Year festival.
It was standing room only as spectators watched traditional Chinese performances including a Dragon dance and a Lion dance.
“It makes you feel so good,” said the President of the Oregon Chinese Coalition Hongcheng Zhao.
His group provided performances and helped organize the event.
But of course, he was saddened by the news of the mass shooting in California in a predominantly Asian American neighborhood.
“Kind of scary, you know because we really don’t want to see that happen here,” Zhao said. “I just feel so bad."
Zhao said unfortunately with recent anti-Asian hate crimes, they have to think about security a lot.
“Security is a major concern for us, right?" he said. “We worry about it every single time, we put about 3,000 dollars into security alone.”
However, Zhao says the turnout at the Community Center lets them know their community is behind them.
“I tend to believe this is an isolated case in the greater community, and 99.9% of the people are super nice to us, and they love for us to be here,” he said.
Zhao says in addition to putting on cultural events, the Coalition offers support to victims of hate crimes as well.
