Two hospitalized after involuntary commitment call turns violent, CMPD says of officer-involved shooting

Two people were hit by gunfire. The investigation is ongoing.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating an officer-involved shooting in northeast Charlotte Saturday afternoon that sent two people to the hospital.

Officers responded to a home along Billings Park Drive, not far from Back Creek Church Road, around 1 p.m. Saturday. According to CMPD, officers were en route to serve involuntary commitment papers for someone at the home.

Involuntary commitment papers can be used to authorize the transport of a person who may be experiencing a mental health crisis, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.

As officers were traveling to the home, 911 operators received calls about the same address. Those callers said someone near the home had a gun and was making threats.

CMPD said when officers got to the house, they found a person with a gun. In a released statement, the police department said this person had been "actively shooting" when officers arrived.  A CMPD officer used their own weapon to shoot this individual.

Police officials said two people had been struck by gunfire: The individual found to be holding the gun and another person. Both were transported to a hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

CMPD said a firearm was recovered from the scene.

It was not clear the state of the person who was originally intended to be involuntarily committed.

No officials were injured in the shooting, police said.

The department said it is investigating what lead up to the shooting, and a parallel investigation from the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is also launching. The officers involved will be placed on paid administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation.

Police have not announced any criminal charges related to the incident.
