Summit County approves nearly $1 million in tax grants for recreation

SUMMIT COUNTY, Utah — The Summit County Council awarded nearly $1 million in tax grant funding to local recreation facilities at its January 11 meeting.

The RAP – Recreation Grant is a part of the sales tax initiative approved by the Utah State Legislature that allows 0.1% of sales tax within the county to be spent on arts and recreation opportunities within the county.

In total, 16 organizations applied for funding throughout the application period, which ended on October 31, and 14 organizations were awarded a cumulative $937,504 in funding.

Two organizations, Park City Ski & Snowboard and North Summit Recreation, were deemed ineligible for funding.

According to a Summit County Council staff report, Park City Ski & Snowboard did not qualify as a “recreational facility,” which is identified by Utah State Code as “a publicly owned or operated park, campground, marina, dock, golf course, playground, athletic field, gymnasium, swimming pool, trail system, or other facility used for recreational purposes.” North Summit Recreation did not submit its application correctly.

The following applicants received funding for their respective projects:

  • Francis City- Playground Equipment $97,000
  • Henefer Town- Rodeo Facilities $90,000
  • Mountain Trails Foundation- Trail Counters $24,300
  • Mountain Trails Foundation- New Signage / Maps $25,600
  • Oakley City Weber River Corridor- $112,880
  • Park City Miner’s Baseball Foundation- Design and Engineering Plans for Turf Fields $86,853
  • Park City Municipal Golf Club- Two Putting Green Mowers $168,363
  • Park City Municipal Parks & Recreation- Ball Netting on Turf Field at Sports Complex $33,090
  • Park City Municipal Park City Recreation- Acoustic Fence at MARC Building $32,295
  • Peoa Recreation Special Services District- Picnic Tables, Playground Equipment & Bathroom Door Repairs $20,500
  • Snyderville Basin SRD- Shading for Willow Creek Park Courts $99,489
  • Snyderville Basin SRD- Field House Cardio Equipment Replacement $90,550
  • Summit Community Gardens- Miss Billie’s Classroom Phase 2 $17,843
  • Park City Ice Arena- New Bathrooms $38,777

$202,495 of approved funding was not used, and will be available during the 2023 grant cycle.
