According to HotCars, the recent Ford F-150 model year to avoid is the 2018 version. The publication recommends staying away from used units from this model year for one significant reason. Not only does the 2018 Ford F-150 have a long history of recalls, but they’re significant enough to make most buyers run away. There have been 15 noted recalls since its initial production in 2018, which is far above the industry average.

Additionally, the most recent recall includes a loss of brake fluid. Furthermore, the recall caused drivers to experience increased pedal effort, reduced front brake function, and a change in brake pedal travel. You don’t have to be an expert to realize that brakes aren’t something you want to stop working at any time while driving. Other problems with the 2018 F-150 include unexpected tailgate openings, exterior lighting problems, and seatbelts that don’t work as intended.

Owners report many problems with the 2018 F-150

Whenever publications recommend avoiding a vehicle, it’s often good to check in with real owners. For those purposes, Car Complaints is perfect. Many owners share the real problems they’ve experienced with hundreds of different models and model years, including the 2018 Ford F-150. It’s clear that outside of recall problems, the F-150 from this model year isn’t perfect in any way.

Many owners have reported experiencing significant engine problems, transmission issues, electrical problems, and more. As a result, it isn’t only recalls an owner has to worry about. Surrounding model years, like the 2019 F-150, aren’t as problematic. If you’re searching for a used version of the full-size truck, it’s easy to find a better option than a 2018 model year.

How much is a used 2018 Ford F-150?

According to Edmunds, 2018 F-150 models are for sale ranging from $18,699 to $36,498. It’s clear that the base models have lost plenty of value, while more costly ones are still expensive. Before the truck experienced problems over the years, it was a well-reviewed full-size truck. For example, it has a high towing and payload capacity, multiple engine options in the lineup, and there’s a Raptor variant for off-road performance.

However, Edmunds also had some issues with the truck in its original review. First, the ride is rough, which isn’t unlike most models in its class. Next, the fuel economy estimates were even worse during testing. Finally, the aluminum body panels carry a high repair cost.

For these reasons and because of the many issues that have surfaced since 2018, used full-size truck buyers should avoid the 2018 Ford F-150. Overall, the most popular truck in America is excellent most of the time, but this specific model year isn’t worth the headache.
