The I-84 closed all eastbound and westbound lanes between Troutdale and Hood River, mileposts 17 to 64, because of icy, windy conditions and multiple traffic collisions in the Columbia River Gorge Tuesday morning
The initial closure was announced shortly after 5 a.m., with just the eastbound lane near Troutdale and Corbett being affected.
A KATU photojournalist on the scene said that there were at least 6 jackknifed semis and crashed cars.
The Multnomah County Sheriff's Office confirmed that this closure involved a crash between multiple vehicles near Corbett, and that at least one person was deceased.
Responding deputies found a semi-truck had collided with an SUV, and the person driving the SUV was deceased.
During the investigation, another semi-truck crashed into the scene.
Sheriff’s deputies activated the East County Vehicular Crimes Team (VCT), who responded to perform a crash investigation.
Preliminary findings suggest the person associated with the SUV was standing outside their vehicle when a semi-truck collided with them and the SUV.
Road conditions throughout the highway were reported as extremely treacherous, with lots of black ice.
KATU's Mike Warner captured footage of a car spinning out on the icy highway.
While the westbound lane was being used to divert eastbound traffic, only an hour later it also faced issues.
Around 7 a.m. the westbound lanes of I-84 closed 2 miles west of Hood River due to the inclement conditions.
The Oregon Department of Transportation stated that crews were working to clear the roads.
Drivers were advised to avoid travel in the Columbia River Gorge, but if travel was necessary ODOT suggested using U.S. 26 over Mount Hood.
At approximately 9 a.m. the westbound lanes reopened for traffic between Troutdale and Hood River, with the eastbound lanes remaining closed for cleaning crews.
This is a developing story, and more information will be added as it becomes available.
