CLEVELAND, Ohio -- With Christmas decorations, lights twinkling and red-and-green lit Terminal Tower as a backdrop and an ice rink full of skaters performing on Public Square, how could you not get into the holiday spirit?
Scott Hamilton, an Ohio native and 1984 Olympic gold medal figure skater and cancer survivor, hosted and emceed a free ice-skating show on the Cleveland Foundation Rink in Public Square. The show – Sk8 to Elmin8 Cancer Cleveland – included performances by Scott’s skating-star friends from Team USA as well as two dozen local children. The children who joined Hamilton on the rink were invited after raising the most money for the Scott Hamilton CARES Foundation and the Cleveland Clinic’s Taussig Cancer Institute.
Spectators circled the rink and others watched from elevated steps and a CLE photo marquee on the square to get a view for the standing-room only event.
Hamilton talked briefly about his cancer battle and how many Americans will be told this year they have some form of cancer. He has been dedicated to changing the future of cancer by funding advanced, innovated research that treats the cancer while sparing the patient.
Many of the skaters performances were in honor of cancer survivors and victims in their personal lives.
The one-hour skating show was capped by a fabulous ice dance routine by Team USA ice dancers Molly Cesanek and Yehor Yehorov.
