I-80 has reopened for passenger vehicles after an overnight closure. Trucks are still being turned around at Colfax and Stateline.
Update as of 8:45 a.m. on Dec. 11:
I-80 between the Nevada-California state line an Colfax remains closed Sunday morning as heavy snow continues to fall in the Sierra.
The interstate shut down on Saturday evening when whiteout conditions and strong winds emerged. Caltrans said there's no estimated time for reopening the roadway.
Snow is forecasted to fall in the higher elevations until this afternoon.
Chains and or snow tires are required on the following mountain passes:
- SR-89: Picketts Junction to Luthers Pass
- SR-89: Closed from Emerald Bay to Bliss State Park
- SR-267: One mile south of Truckee to Kings Beach
- US-50: Three miles east of Placerville to Meyers

I-80 is shutting down between Kingvale and Truckee in the Sierra because of snowy conditions. Traffic is being turned around in Kingvale for eastbound travelers and Truckee for westbound motorists. There is no estimated time of reopening.

Chain controls are back on Donner Summit Friday night. This system is expected to be in effect through Saturday morning.
Chains are required on all vehicles except 4-wheel drive with snow tires on the following I-80 roads, trucks are on minimum restrictions.

- WB I-80 from Donner Lake Interchange to Rainbow

Chain control has been dropped over Donner Summit for now. The second system is expected to ramp back up Friday night into Saturday morning. Travel is expected to be near impossible at times throughout the weekend.

If you need to get over Donner Summit, Friday morning is the time to do it. The National Weather Service in Reno says travel is expected to be "treacherous" at times over the course of the weekend.
Chain controls or snow tires are required as of Friday morning on the following mountain passes:
- I-80: Truckee to Drum Forebay in both directions
- SR-89: Truckee to Tahoe City
- SR-267: Northstar to Kings Beach
A set of winter storms brings chain controls to Nevada and California mountain passes as of Thursday night.
Winter advisory is in effect for Donner Pass and the Sierra crest Thursday night starting at 10 p.m. and ends at 4 a.m. on Friday. This does not include Truckee or Lake Tahoe.
Chains are required on all vehicles except 4-wheel drive with snow tires on the following Nevada and California passes.
