New scent preservation kits available in Orange County to help find missing people
Getting the best information as soon as possible is vital when someone goes missing, especially for young children and vulnerable adults.
Using highly-trained bloodhounds are used to find those who wander away.
The dogs and a kit that can hold a unique scent help to hopefully lead the dog to that missing person.
"The people we want to receive these kits are anyone who has an at-risk family member that may wander. Alzheimer’s patient, dementia, could be a handicapped child," Orange County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Bruce McMullen said.
The past few weeks in Central Florida have been tragic.
"In just the last month, we've had three tragic deaths in Central Florida where a child or an adult has wandered away and (was) later found deceased," Orange County Sheriff John Mina said.
In a video produced by the sheriff’s office, the narrator explains how you use the cloth on a vulnerable person.
"Wipe on the body, place in the jar and seal it up, so this scent kit is designed to give that dog the purest scent," the video explained.
Deputies say the kit from Scent Evidence K-9 can be a valuable tool.
The scent from the vulnerable child or adult is ready to be used in the event they wander away.
Once someone is gone, it can be chaotic.
You may grab an article of clothing, but there's no guarantee somebody else didn't touch it, move it, adding perhaps a confusing scent.
"If they properly capture the scent in the preservation kit, it's 100 percent verified and accurate that this is the target we're going to be tracking," McMullen said.
The kits are a partnership between the Orange County Sheriff's Office and the Senior Resource Alliance, free to all who need them.
"Caregivers of our most vulnerable population will be ready with an uncontaminated scent article if the unthinkable happens," Karla Radka, the CEO of Senior Resource Alliance, said.
The kits include a thumb drive.
The family can load photos and information about the missing person which can help searchers. The first responder can use the thumb drive to immediately share that information to other searchers.
"The success rate goes up when you have a good scent article to start with," McMullen said.
The kits can be picked up at Orange County Sheriff’s Office headquarters and all substations.
All members of the family need to know there is a kit and where to find it if someone does wander off.
