Teaneck’s Bischoff’s selling its last ice cream scoops

TEANECK, NJ (PIX11) — Teaneck’s beloved Bischoff’s will shut down at the end of December after 88 years serving up ice cream, the store announced Wednesday.

The Mather family has owned the ice cream and candy store in the center of Teaneck since 1934. Bischoff’s is closing its doors because of financial difficulties.

“The supply chain isn’t there for all the products that we need,” said owner Anita Mather. “The cost of everything is going up.”

Bischoff’s was one of the last old-fashioned ice cream shops in New Jersey still open. Its last day will be Saturday, Dec. 31.

“We now ask that you show your support by stopping by the store to share your fond memories with us and enjoy your favorite sweet treat (or two!). We hope to see you all over the next few weeks,” the store wrote on Facebook.

Bischoff’s is known for its scrumptious sundaes and candy. They sell 40 flavors of ice cream from the Cedar Lane shop.

Customers were lined up Thursday to enjoy Bischoff’s ice scream while they still can. The Mathers said they are thankful for all the hugs, phone calls an gratitude they’ve received from their customers.

“I’m going to miss all these customers,” said owner Steve Mather. “It’s my heart and soul.”

For many Bischoff’s customers, the ice cream shop’s closure feels like losing an old family friend.

“I remember coming here as a kid just like so many other people do,” said Ridgefield Park resident Jonathan Murray.
