During a typical year, many people look forward to the holiday season — and now that we are back to a bit more “normality” since the COVID-19 pandemic, many holiday events are back into full swing (or just about).
The Jersey Shore might not be on your list as a top destination during the winter holidays, but many towns dotting the coastline have some special events worth checking out, despite the cold.
Here are some of the events — holiday-related or just something fun — happening the weekend of Dec. 8 to Dec. 11 (and beyond) along the Jersey Shore.
Asbury Park
Asbury Park Kwanzaa Celebration — Saturday, Dec. 10, 2 p.m., at the Asbury Park Senior Center, 1201 Springwood Ave., 2nd Floor, Asbury Park. This celebration of culture and community will feature cultural music, performances by local artists, refreshments, giveaways and more.
Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar 2022 at The Asbury Hotel — Sundays through Dec. 18, 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. at The Asbury Hotel, 210 5th Ave, Asbury Park. The Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar, hosted by Asbury Park Bazaar and The Asbury Hotel, features local and regional artists, vendors and shops selling their goods inside The Asbury’s indoor lounge and hall, and outside in heated tents on the terrace. Also onsite are food, drinks, entertainment and craft workshops. Entertainment and vendors vary each Sunday. Free to attend, service animals only.
Asbury Park Holiday Bazaar 2022 at the Grand Arcade of Convention Hall — Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 18, noon to 5 p.m. at Grand Arcade of Convention Hall, 1300 Ocean Ave N, Asbury Park. Enjoy shopping from 16 local designers and makers (which vary each day), along with retail tenants Betty’s Icebox, Wanderlust, Carla Gizzi, Funhouse, Drift, Sanctum Handmade and Asbury Park Roastery, in historic Convention Hall. Also onsite are food, drinks, entertainment, a toy drive, photos with Santa and more. Free to attend, pet friendly.
“Local * ish,” a group art exhibition — Exhibit on view through Dec. 23. Gallery open Mondays noon to 5 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday by appointment, Fridays noon to 8 p.m., Saturdays noon to 9 p.m., and Sundays noon to 6 p.m.; Parlor Gallery, 717 Cookman Ave., Asbury Park. This exhibition features a variety of works by local and not-so-local artists to Asbury Park. Exhibiting artists include Suzanne Anan, Gavin Benjamin, Arthur Brouthers, Ericka Bruno, Porkchop, Pau Quintanajornet, Bobby Tramontano, and more.
Shabbos Chanukah 2022 with The Mandels — Dec. 23 to 25, various times, The Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel, 1401 Ocean Ave North, Asbury Park. Winter Wonderland Parade — Saturday, Dec. 10, noon, Atlantic City. The Winter Wonderland Parade is returning to Atlantic City. Parade route starts on Bacharach Boulevard at Indiana Avenue, travels through Tanger Outlets, onto Atlantic Avenue and ends at Center City Park. Free event. Jingle Bell Bar: A Holiday Pop-up Experience — Thursdays through Sundays until Jan. 1, 2023, 5 p.m. to midnight, at 1927 Lounge at Ocean Casino Resort, Atlantic City. Ocean Casino Resort brings in the holiday spirit by transforming 1927 Lounge into Jingle Bell Bar: A Holiday Pop-up Experience, featuring festive cocktails, nostalgic decor, and themed entertainment. Ocean will make a monetary donation to Atlantic County Toys for Kids.
The Atlantic City Ballet presents The Nutcracker — Friday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 10 at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., at Stockton Performing Arts Center, Galloway. Saturday, Dec. 17, 7 p.m., at Caesars Atlantic City. Watch this holiday classic performed by Atlantic City Ballet since 1982. The Atlantic City Ballet presents It’s a Shore Holiday — Dec. 21, 22, 27, 28, at 7 p.m., Showboat Atlantic City. It’s a Shore Holiday features a blend of contemporary and classical dance performances set to holiday tunes. Singers and a live band add to the Winter Wonderland experience. Tickets $20-45.
Candy Cane Lounge Pop Up at Resorts Casino Hotel — Daily through Tuesday, Jan. 3, 2023, at Resorts Casino Hotel, Atlantic City. Bar One at Resorts is transformed into the Candy Cane Lounge Pop Up with candy cane-inspired drinks like the Candy Cane Kringle and Mistletoe Martini, live music and more.
Swing Into Christmas musical comedy show — Friday, Dec. 9, 8 p.m., at Resorts Casino Hotel, Atlantic City. This annual performance starring Jim “The Singing Lifeguard” Craine, the Atlantic City Allstar Band, Atlantic City’s songstress Suzie Neustadter, tv host and singer Michele Dawn Mooney, and more benefits U.S. Marine Corps’ Toys For Tots campaign. Deck the Hall - Festival of Trees — Now through Saturday, Dec. 31, Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall lobby, Atlantic City. View the decorated trees on display in the lobby of Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall for free during the hours the lobby is open. In conjunction with the CRDA and Lite 96.9 WFPG, local businesses, organizations, arena partners sponsor the holiday trees to help raise funds for Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for children of Atlantic, Cape May, and Camden counties.
Historic pipe organ recitals — Weekdays through Friday, Dec. 23, at noon, Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City. The historic pipe organ will be doing free daily recitals (donations accepted), with 2-hour walking Curator’s tours on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. for $10.
Atlantic Highlands
Bayshore Holiday Bazaar 2022 — Saturday, Dec. 10, and Sunday, Dec. 11, noon to 5 p.m. at Shore Casino in Atlantic Highlands. The Bayshore Holiday Bazaar, in its second year, features local and regional artists, vendors, and shops selling vintage and handmade art, jewelry, home goods, and more. This holiday market is inspired by the traditional “Weihnachtsmarkts” held in Germany and the venue offers water views with ample, free parking. The event is free, all ages, rain or shine and pet-friendly.
Beach Haven
Irving Berlin’s White Christmas, the Musical — 2 p.m. performances on Dec. 7, 8, 10, 11, 14, 15, 17 and 18; 7:30 p.m. performances on Dec. 9, 10, 16, and 17 at Surflight Theatre, 201 Engleside Ave., Beach Haven. Four singers join forces to help a World War II veteran bring his small country inn back to prosperity in this fun-filled holiday musical. Tickets $31 for children 12 and under, $41 for adults.
Belmar
Christmas Light Show — Saturday, Dec. 10, 5 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., Connelly-Campion-Wright Building at 704 Belmar Plaza, Belmar. The Christmas Light Show returns this year in a new location at Belmar Plaza. The shows, which run approximately 20 minutes, are free, but donations are welcomed to help raise money for RallyCap Sports, a nonprofit 501-c-3 charity which sponsors sports programs and builds facilities for children with disabilities.
2022 Menorah Lighting — Saturday, Dec. 19, 5:30 p.m., Pyanoe Plaza, 9th and Main Street, Belmar. Belmar’s 2022 menorah lighting will take place in Pyanoe Plaza at dusk.
Cape May
Holiday Farm dinners at Beach Plum Farm — Fridays and Saturdays through Dec. 24, 5:30 p.m, Beach Plum Farm, 140 Stevens St., West Cape May. Holiday farm-to-table dinners at Beach Plum Farm begin with a hayride tour of the farm fields, followed by a candlelit stroll through the Woodland Trail for fellowship and cocktail hour. The multi-course family-style meal highlights the pasture-raised turkeys, heritage pork, winter vegetables and fresh herbs. “An Old-fashioned Christmas” Exhibit — Now through Jan. 1, 2023, beginning at 10 a.m. Closed Christmas Day. Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Cape May. The Carroll Gallery in the Carriage House of the Emlen Physick Estate is transformed into a holiday wonderland with an extensive Dept. 56 Dickens Village collection, as well as old family photos, trains and more on display. Free admission.
Winter Wonderwalk — Now through Jan. 1, 2023 at Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St., Cape May. Take a free walk around the decorated grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, Cape May’s only Victorian House Museum.
Tis the Season: The Forgotten Caroler — Dec. 8, 9, 15, 22, and 23, 6:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., Physick House Museum, Cape May. An unexpected winter storm disrupts the Bennett family’s holiday plans — will they find a way to regain their holiday spirit? An original play, written by Jennifer Hickok, brings the audience along the drama of a Victorian Christmas gone wrong as the drama moves from room to room on the first floor of the 1879 Physick House Museum. Tickets $20-25, reservations recommended.
Lamplighter Christmas Tour — Friday, Dec. 9 and 16, Tuesday, Dec. 27, and Thursday, Dec. 29, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Cape May. This self-guided evening tour includes a selection of Cape May’s finest B&B inns and private homes, decorated for the holidays, and includes “An Old-fashioned Christmas” exhibit at the Physick Estate’s Carroll Gallery. The Congress Hall Express and Carousel — Train rides Thursdays through Sundays until Dec. 31, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Carousel rides Thursdays and Fridays, 4 p.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 7 p.m., until Dec. 31, Congress Hall, 200 Congress Place, Cape May. The carousel returns for Winter Wonderland, and Congress Hall Express offers train rides around the grand hotel’s lawn and veranda. $5 per ride. Cape Resorts Hotel guests receive one Train & Carousel Ticket at check-in per child under 12 years of age.
Christmas Cabaret — Saturday nights through Dec. 17, 5:30 p.m., Congress Hall, 200 Congress Place, Cape May. Sing along with Darin MacDonald in this new holiday spectacular for all ages. Christmas Candlelight House Tours — Saturdays through Dec. 18, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at various properties in Cape May. Cape May’s Christmas Candlelight House Tours, presented by Cape May MAC, have been an annual tradition for nearly 50 years. The self-guided tour allows you to step inside decorated historic homes, inns, bed and breakfasts, churches and hotels. Each Saturday features different properties and advance purchase is recommended. Tickets $30-45.
Santa’s Trolley Rides — 30-minute daytime tours on Dec. 11, 17 and 18, various times, Physick Estate, Cape May. Mrs. Claus tells stories and sings holiday songs on this trolley ride through town, and Santa himself makes an appearance at the gazebo on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate. Trolley tour: All That Glitters! Victorians ring in a new century! — Daytime tours on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays through Dec. 23, Washington Street Mall Information Booth, Cape May. Holiday Lights Trolley Rides — 30-minute evening tours until Dec. 31, except Dec. 24 and 25, Ocean Street trolley stop, Cape May. Listen to Christmas music as you take a tour through the historic streets of Cape May and take in the lights of the Victorian homes, inns, and bed and breakfasts decorated for the holidays. Holiday Drag Show - 2022 SLAY Ride! — Wednesday, Dec. 14, 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., at Proving Ground Waterfront Dining, 56 Shrewsbury Ave., Highlands. This holiday-themed Drag Show will sleigh you! With tributes ranging from Rudolph to the Virgin Mary to a live Christmas tree, and new games, give-aways and more, you’re in for a night of fantastic entertainment. Seating begins at 6 p.m., show at 7 p.m. Tickets are $35, which includes show admission, a complimentary welcome cocktail and meet and greet with the cast. This is a 21+ event.

Join in on the fun at this community Chanukah celebration with holiday games, latkes, sufganiyot (pillowy round doughnuts filled with jelly or custard and topped with powdered sugar, a Chanukah tradition) and a menorah lighting. Ocean City

Sea of Lights — Fridays and Saturdays from Dec. 9 to 17, plus Dec. 27 and 28, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, Point Pleasant Beach. This winter wonderland features treats, crafts, games and holiday entertainment. Take free photos with Santa on Dec. 10 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Between Dec. 26 and 28, check out the Diving Santa show (requires admission fee into the aquarium). The Aquarium, Sweet Shop, Aquarium Gift Shop, Pavilion & Pavilion Arcade will be open for the holiday event.
There is also a Holly Jolly Package from Dec. 1 to 31, which includes aquarium admission, a $10 Pavilion Arcade Play Card, light-up necklace, hot chocolate (redeemed at Pavilion during Sea of Lights or at the Sweet Shop during regular business hours), and chocolate lollipop and candy cane (redeemed at the Sweet Shop), for $29 per person.

Smithville

Light Show on the Lake — Daily, 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., through Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, 615 E. Moss Mill Rd., Smithville. The Light Show on the Lake features approximately 120 Christmas trees — made of more than 50,000 lights — “floating” on Lake Meone in the center of Historic Smithville. As soon as it gets dark, an orchestrated show of lights and music is played out across the lake as the lights reflect off the water’s surface. Free.
Magic Talking Christmas Tree — Saturdays through Dec. 17, noon to 7 p.m., and Sundays through Dec. 18, noon to 6 p.m., next to the Smithville Train Station, 615 E. Moss Mill Rd., Smithville. The Magic Talking Christmas Tree is an oversized Christmas tree brought in from Santa’s forest which awakens to talk with visitors about holiday wishes. Free.
Smithville Train — Open during village hours, 615 E. Moss Mill Rd., Smithville. Take a nearly 7-minute train ride along the outskirts of Smithville for $3 per person, which runs weather permitting throughout the month of December. Call 609-748-8999 to verify it’s operating.
S’mores on the Greene — Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting, 615 E. Moss Mill Rd., Smithville. For a small fee, purchase a s’mores packet and make some gooey treats around the fire pits on the Greene, or just gather to get warm and watch the fun.
Spring Lake
Holiday Shopping Soiree — Thursday, Dec. 8, 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., various shops in Spring Lake. Shop the Greater Spring Lake shopping district for items such as art, books, children’s and adult clothing, food items, home decor and more. The Sculptures of Seward Johnson — Now through Jan. 31, 2023, downtown Spring Lake. The life-like sculptures of Seward Johnson are on display in downtown Spring Lake. Johnson, who was born in New Brunswick on April 16, 1930, and died on March 10, 2020, created memorable statues depicting simple, everyday activities, 16 of which are on display. Free, self-guided tours at your leisure and docent-led tours available by appointment.

Holiday boat tours along Tuckerton Creek — Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Dec. 11, plus Dec. 12 to 14, tours begin hourly from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuckerton Seaport, 120 West Main St., Tuckerton. Enjoy a narrated open-air tour along Tuckerton Creek as guides talk about holiday traditions and possibly see houses and buildings lit up in holiday lights along the bay. Tours last 50 minutes, and it is recommended to bring blankets (and even hot chocolate!) as it might be a bit chilly on the water. $10 for Tuckerton Seaport members, $15 for non-members, and tour includes admission to the lighthouse. Christmas Light Event at the Tuckerton Railroad — Saturdays and Sundays from Dec. 10 to 18, as well as Saturday, Dec. 31, and Sunday, Jan. 1, 2023, from noon to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.; at The Tuckerton Railroad, 11 Oak Avenue, Bass River. Take a ride on the 1/8th scale trains along a mile-long track through the Woods of New Gretna Municipal Park decorated in Christmas lights at the Jersey Shore Live Steam Organization/The Tuckerton Railroad.
