Former Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt predicted an instant turnaround for the Buffaloes football program under new head coach Deion Sanders. Sanders, who did not hide about his aspirations to attack the transfer portal, could bring an instant impact to Colorado after turning around Jackson State over the last three seasons. Klatt detailed why he saw Sanders as the right fit to get things moving fast in Boulder.

“A couple of things that I want to touch on that you touched on, the transfer issue at Colorado, they have addressed it and fixed it,” Klatt said on his podcast. “And the Chancellor Phil de Stefano, talked about it in their press conference. The bottom line was this, it’s not about some sort of outlandish academic requirement to get in. The problem was is that at Colorado, there wasn’t a general education degree. Because of that, any credit that would fall under that, so any sort of PE credit, so it doesn’t matter if it’s from a really good school or not, there was just not a spot for it at Colorado. They have fixed that now, both for athletes and non athletes. That’s going to help them in the transfer portal a great deal.”

Colorado went 1-11 last season under then-head coach Karl Dorrel (five games) and interim coach Mike Sanford. Sanders teased bringing his own guys in and doing things his way, for better or worse.

“And then the last part that I would just say is (that) I’m so interested in, is what is the staff makeup,” Klatt said. “He’s certainly driving the bus, but it matters who is on the bus with him. And so I’m really interested to see and kind of feel and talk with the guys that he hires as his assistants, there at Colorado. The sky is going to be the limit there. They’re talking about expectations almost immediately. And this is the type of guy that I wouldn’t bet against him that he’s going to transform this roster very quickly.”

Jackson State went 27-5 under Sanders, including two consecutive SWAC Championships and Celebration Bowl appearances. Sanders and Jackson State lost last year’s Celebration Bowl but get another crack at the title Dec. 17 against North Carolina Central.

“We’ve got a few positions already taken care of because I’m bringing my luggage with me. And it’s Louis. I’m coming,” Sanders told his team during his introduction. “Yea, the quarterback is coming. Yea, about 10 more of them are coming. And they dogs. And they gone hunt. And they gone eat.”
