US investigating December flight cancellations at Southwest
DALLAS (AP) — The federal government is investigating whether Southwest Airlines knowingly scheduling more flights than it could handle in December, when it ended up canceling nearly 17,000 flights. The Transportation Department says scheduling too many flights would violate federal laws against deceptive practices. The department said Wednesday it’s in the early stages of its investigation, and it will also make sure that Southwest provides prompt refunds and reimbursements to customers who were stranded by the cancellations. Southwest’s breakdown started with a winter storm and was compounded when its crew-scheduling system became overloaded. The airline has hired a consultant to study what went wrong.
Russian coronavirus-denying ex-monk sentenced to 7 years
MOSCOW (AP) — A former Russian Orthodox monk, who denied that the coronavirus existed and defied the Kremlin, was handed a seven-year prison sentence Friday. Nikolai Romanov, 67, who was known as Father Sergiy until his excommunication by the Russian Orthodox Church, urged his followers to disobey the Russian government’s lockdown measures and spread conspiracy theories about a global plot to control the masses. A court in Moscow convicted him of inciting hatred. His lawyer immediately announced plans to appeal. Romanov served as a police officer during Soviet times, but after quitting the ranks was convicted of murder, robbery and assault and sentenced to 13 years in prison. He became a monk after his release.

Mexico finds 57 adolescent migrants crammed into truck
MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican immigration authorities say they have found 57 Guatemalan adolescents packed into a trailer on a highway near the U.S. border. The National Immigration Institute says that during an inspection Thursday officers discovered the 43 boys and 14 girls were crammed into the truck’s trailer, along with eight men and a woman and her daughter. All of the adolescents were considered unaccompanied minors, meaning they had no relatives or parents with them. The driver of the vehicle was detained. The minors were taken to a child welfare facility. Children are frequently smuggled through Mexico to rejoin parents or relatives who have already emigrated to the the United States.

UN envoy hopes UN will OK force for Haiti to combat gangs
UNITED NATIONS (AP) — The U.N. special envoy for Haiti says she heard “caution” from the United States and Canada about possibly leading an international armed force to help Haiti combat gangs but not “a definite `No.'” Helen La Lime expressed hope Wednesday that the U.N. Security Council will deal positively with the issue of the force requested by the Haitian government. She sid at a news conference that an international armed force would be a partner of the Haitian National Police “that would go against the gangs.” At a Security Council meeting Tuesday, the United States and Canada showed no interest in deploying security personnel. They are the two countries most often mentioned as possible leaders of an international armed force.

A bomb injures at least a 12 people near a market in Congo
KINSHASA, Congo (AP) — Authorities in Congo say a bomb exploded at a market in the country’s east, injuring at least a dozen people. Local official Tharcisse Katembo says an unknown person detonated a bomb inside a bag Wednesday in North Kivu’s Beni town. No one has claimed responsibility for the bomb. The United Nations says attacks have been increasing in North Kivu by the Allied Democratic Forces, which is believed to be linked with the Islamic State extremist group. Earlier this month at least 14 people were killed and dozens injured in an attack on a church in Kasindi town, which was claimed by Islamic State. It said in its Aamaq news outlet that it planted an explosive device inside the church and detonated it while people were praying.

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Authorities in north-central Mexico have confirmed that a U.S. resident was among four people who were killed in the state of Zacatecas around Christmas. The state prosecutors office confirmed the identity of the man as José Melesio Gutiérrez. The man’s employer, the Cincinnati, Ohio firm Champlin Architecture, said he “died tragically while visiting his fiancé, Daniela Pichardo, in Mexico during the holidays.” Gutiérrez, his fiancé, her sister and a cousin left in a car on Christmas to visit a nearby town. Their skeletal remains were found in January in a clandestine burial pit. It was not clear if Gutiérrez was a U.S. citizen.
