Out of the Blue: The Michigan Wolverines are Big Ten champions...AGAIN!

The Michigan Wolverines have landed a commitment from Jacob Oden, a four-star athlete in the 2024 class. Oden, who is being recruited as a defensive back and played high school football at Harper Woods, listed Michigan in his top five in late December. He also visited Ann Arbor in mid-January, and visited Michigan a few times last year, including for the BBQ at the Big House and for the games against MSU, Colorado State and UConn.

After one of the uglier losses of the season, Michigan picked up a much-needed victory, blowing out the Northwestern Wildcats on the road, 68-51. The Wolverines played fast, moved the ball well, and used a big second half run to secure their second Quad 1 victory of the season (with Maryland moving into the Top 30 in the NET rankings, their win over Maryland on Jan. 1 technically counts as a Quad 1 win now).

Coming off three losses in four games, the Michigan Wolverines needed a win, period, let alone their first Quad 1 win of the season. It’s no secret Juwan Howard’s 2022-23 rendition of the Michigan Wolverines haven’t been consistent, nor do they own many impressive wins. After a tight home loss to the No. 1 Purdue Boilermakers and a tough road loss over the weekend to Penn State, time is running out for Michigan to get a single Quad 1 victory this year, something the NCAA Tournament committee looks at perhaps more than anything else.

Under Jim Harbaugh, tight ends have been the cornerstone of the Wolverines’ red zone passing offense, making Michigan one of the top destinations in the country for top tight end talent. The 2024 cycle is loaded at the position and there is a legitimate shot Michigan lands at least two blue-chippers, with one (four-star Hogan Hansen) already committed.

The Michigan Wolverines added perhaps the final piece to their 2023 class today with the addition of Sierra Canyon (CA) three-star defensive lineman Cameron Brandt. The staff flipped Brandt from Stanford, where he had been committed since July. Once former Cardinal head coach David Shaw stepped down after the 2022 season, the Wolverines turned up the heat on Brandt. They hosted him for an official visit during the weekend of Jan. 20, which was the final push they needed to pull off the flip.
