SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A winter storm moved through KELOLAND and now the focus is cleaning up the snow that fell.

People parked on city streets in Sioux Falls will need to move their vehicles. The Public Works Street Division has declared a snow alert beginning at 9 p.m. on Thursday. Plowing of emergency snow routes will start in Zones 2 and 3 and will continue until routes are clear.

As of noon on Friday, there are more than 30 school and city snow alerts on the KELOLAND closeline.

Snowfall totals

How much snow should you expect? Well, it depends on where you live.

KELOLAND Meteorologist Scot Mundt pulled snowfall totals from several towns in the area. The most snow fell southwest of Sioux Falls, with more than 10 inches measured there. Harrisburg, Wall Lake, Garretson and Hartford all reported more than 8 inches of snow. Review the list of totals in the story below.

SD road conditions

Drivers can get an idea of what to expect on the South Dakota 511 website.

As of 12 p.m. Friday, roads in the eastern half of the state are marked as slippery with snow and ice. That includes Interstate 29 north of Sioux Falls and Interstate 90 from the Minnesota border to near Chamberlain. Interstate 29 from the Iowa state line to US 18 at Exit 59 is said to have scattered snow with slush on it. It is slippery from Exit 59 north to Sioux Falls.

KELOLAND Closeline

As weather conditions change, check the KELOLAND Closeline for the latest school and businesses closings across South Dakota. Several cities also put snow emergency information on the Closeline including Brandon, Beresford and Harrisburg.

Sioux Falls Snow Alert

The city of Sioux Falls issued snow alert Thursday evening. Those are called after at least two inches of snow. Plows focus on emergency snow routes first, then move into each of Sioux Falls’ three zones to clear all city streets. 

All vehicles parked on emergency snow routes are subject to ticketing and towing once the snow alert is issued.

Wagner had issues a snow alert which said all vehicles must be off the street by 4 p.m. today for the next 24 hours.
