Hockey notes: Golden Hawks stay unbeaten

Posted

Rock is rollin’.

Council Rock South (5-0) racked up its fifth straight win of the Suburban High School Hockey League season last Wednesday with its 4-1 win over Neshaminy in the nightcap of a doubleheader at Grundy. The Golden Hawks have trailed for just 15 seconds all season.

Jake Weiner had a hat trick, marking his second consecutive multi-goal game, and goalie Carson Lopez lowered his GAA to 1.29.

CR South entered the game with the SHSHL’s assist leader – Kevin Koles has eight apples – and the National Conference’s co-scoring leader. Blaize Pepe lit the lamp six times coming into Neshaminy.

Council Rock North (1-5) fell to Pennsbury 7-3 in the opener. Three of the Indians’ losses have been by one goal. Zach Weissman has a point in four of CR North’s last five games.

Also last Wednesday night at Hatfield, Central Bucks West (2-3) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-3 win over Bensalem. CB West never trailed against the Owls and five different Bucks scored. West goalie Liam Rogers saved 28 shots in an accolade-earning performance.

The Bucks had scored just four goals in their three losses; their four-goal explosion in the third period was a welcome sight.

In a Dec. 1 doubleheader at Grundy, Central Bucks South (2-2-0-1) outshot Neshaminy 39-29 but fell 6-4 to the Redskins. D.J. Lindenmuth scored twice for the Titans. He tied the game at 4 with seven minutes remaining, but the Redskins responded twice. Aydin Thierolf has a point in all five South games.

In a stunning upset in the night cap, Bensalem (1-4) earned its first win of the season against the defending state champions. The Owls skated away with a 6-3 win over Pennridge (2-2). Andrew Savona, Kevin Pico and Shane Dachowski – all key returners from last year’s title team, combined for 10 goals in the Rams’ opening three games.

On Thursday in Hatfield, Pennsbury handed Central Bucks East (4-1) its first loss 6-3. The Patriots used two power-play goals to help erase a 3-0 deficit to 4-3, but could get no closer. Corey Kosick’s six goals are the third most in the National.

In the American conference, Quakertown (3-1) suffered its first loss of the year when Wissahickon topped the Panthers 3-1. Branden McNally scored his ninth goal of the season. Matthew Krem stopped 37 Trojan shots, raising his save percentage to .914.

Week six of SHSHL play started with Wednesday’s late games when CR North and CR South laced ’em up two weeks after their Thanksgiving Eve rivalry. Quakertown hosted Plymouth Whitemarsh, CB South hosted North Penn and CB West played Wissahickon.

On Thursday, Pennridge battles Souderton while both CB South and CB West take to the ice again; South to play Pennsbury at Grundy while West takes on Neshaminy in Hatfield. CB East’s match with Bensalem and Quakertown’s game with Abington, both on Friday, close the week.
