ELYRIA, Ohio — Two men managed to break out a window Wednesday night and escape from the Lorain/Medina Community Based Correctional Facility.
According to the Lorain County Sheriff’s Office, Steven Carpenter and Johnny Brooks Jr. got out of the facility just before 6:30 p.m. They were last seen running southeast from the facility located on 9892 Murray Ridge Road.
Sheriff’s deputies and a K9 from the Lorain Police Department searched the area but were unable to find the men Wednesday night.
Carpenter, who was serving a sentence for burglary, might have been wearing a black hooded sweat shirt and dark colored sweat pants. He is 5-foot-6, 140 pounds, with short brown hair and brown eyes. Carpenter has a beard and a tattoo above his left eye.
Brooks, who was serving a sentence for possession of drugs, might have been wearing a black hooded sweat shirt and blue jeans. He is 5-foot-8, 180 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. His last known address is in Wadsworth.
Officials say people should not attempt to capture or make contact with the two men. Anyone with information can contact the sheriff’s department at 440-244-0373, 440-323-1212, or by dialing 911.
The facility has 130 beds and serves Lorain and Medina counties. It is described as a “secure” facility that provides an alternative to prison with “the primary purpose of reducing recidivism for male and female felony offenders using cognitive behavioral programming that addresses criminal and addictive behaviors along with educational and vocational opportunities.”
