Weld RE-9 looks to replace 2 schools in Ault, Pierce
The Weld RE-9 School District is eying new schools to combat growth in the district. The district, which services less than 1,000 students in Ault, Pierce, Nunn and Carr needs to replace two of its three aging schools – Highland Elementary in Pierce and Highland Middle in Ault, which are each a century old. The Greeley Tribune reports replacing the schools will cost $98 million. The district will likely ask residents next year to approve a multi-million bond measure to help defray costs. Budweiser Events Center in Loveland to get new name, new look
The Budweiser Events Center in Loveland is getting a new name and a whole new look. Naming rights to the county-owned facility on the Ranch Events Complex grounds will go to the Blue Federal Credit Union, according to the Coloradoan.. The bank will change the name to the Blue Arena this fall. This summer, the facility will undergo a nearly $5 million renovation that includes new seating, suite upgrades, and road improvements. Estes Park Aerial Tramway facing closure
The Estes Park Aerial Tramway may soon be a footnote in history. BizWest reports the tramway that’s been open since 1955 is at risk of closing since no one left in the family can operate it. The tramway near the center of Estes Park offers visitors stunning views of Rocky Mountain National Park as you ride up the side of Prospect Mountain. At the top, there’s a coffee shop, a gift shop, and some hiking trails. Without a prospective buyer, the Heron family says the tramway will not open for the 2023 season. Nearly 10K people cited for speeding in construction, school zones in CO
Nearly 10,000 people were cited for speeding in construction or school zones in Colorado over a three-year period from 2019 to 2021. The Colorado State Patrol is asking drivers to slow down in these zones, and says these other drivers showed a reckless disregard for the lives of children and roadside workers. More than 208,000 drivers were cited for speeding over the same time period. Those most cited hailed from five counties in Colorado, including Weld County.

Woman sentenced in poisoning death of Red Feather Lakes man
A Grand Junction woman, who killed man in Red Feather Lakes in 2016 will spend three decades behind bars. Cynthia Wilkinson, 58, pleaded guilty to a charge of second-degree murder and was sentenced to 30 years in prison. The Coloradoan reports Wilkinson admitted to poisoning Derek Brock so she could take ownership of his Red Feather Lakes property and vehicles. Greeley police investigate use of force in arrest
Greeley police are investigating whether the use of force in the recent arrest of a suspect wanted for eluding was necessary. A video of an arrest that surfaced on YouTube shows officers punching George Trevino in the head and striking his knee as he resisted arrest. This all happened on January 23rd on the 2400 block of 17th Avenue when police spotted Trevino, who was wanted by Evans police for felony eluding and obstruction. The Greeley Tribune reports body-camera footage shows Greeley officers had used a stun gun on Trevino, who managed to disarm officers; they then began punching him as they ordered him to drop the weapon. First low-income workforce housing units open in Old Town
The first-ever low-income workforce housing project opens in Old Town Fort Collins. Oak 140, at the corner of Remington and Oaks streets, is a five-story 79-unit apartment building, open to residents who make between 30% and 80% of the area’s median income. The Coloradoan reports a one-bedroom apartment in Fort Collins costs as much as $1,600 permonth. But for some, at Oak 140, it will cost just over $500. The Downtown Development Authority said the building aims to provide an option for employees who work in the service industry in Fort Collins to live in the city. Read more at https://www.the Ft. Platteville police: Man threw cologne at officer in ‘drunken rage’
A man was charged with assaulting a law enforcement officer during his arrest. It happened on January 18 on the 300 block of Disc Lane. Police said 22-year-old Jose Palomarez III and his mother got into a fight while he was in what his mother described as a “drunken rage.” Court records, obtained by the Greeley Tribune, show as a Platteville police officer responded to the scene, police said Palomarez broke a door and threw a glass cologne bottle at the officer. Police: Man tried to stab Greeley officer with metal file
A man is behind bars at the Weld County Jail after police said he tried to stab an officer while resisting arrest. Police said 29-year-old Joshua Minteer was being arrested for allegedly assaulting people at the cold weather shelter in Greeley earlier this month. The Greeley Tribune reports when deputies responded to the disturbance, they say Minteer tried to stab one of them in the chest with a metal file, but the officer’s bulletproof vest protected him from injury. Police tackled Minteer, who they say kicked an officer in the face. Police said Minteer also had meth on his person. He also had several active warrants out for his arrest on charges of robbery and theft. He now faces new charges of attempted murder, assault, harassment, drug possession and indecent exposure. Evans man arrested after hours-long standoff
An Evans man wanted by police won’t face additional charges despite an hours-long standoff with police. Evans officers, who were there to arrest 32-year-old Louis Enriquez, spotted him outside his home on the 2800 block of Arbor Garden Drive, the Greeley Tribune reported. When he saw officers, Enriquez fled inside and refused commands to exit the home. Officers used a reverse 911 system to ask neighbors to shelter-in-place while the standoff ensued. Enriquez, eventually, peacefully surrendered. He was wanted for failing to comply with warrants for two October arrests on drug possession, prohibited use of a weapon, harassment, disorderly conduct, and criminal mischief charges.
