Warning: The following contains spoilers from Wednesday’s episode of Chicago P.D. Proceed accordingly.
After months and months of obsessing, Upton finally got her guy.
Chicago P.D.‘s fall finale on Wednesday saw the Intelligence cop rescue a van full of missing girls — irrefutable evidence that Sean was a child trafficker. But when Upton and Voight went to make the arrest, they found Chief O’Neal dead and his son barely alive after what appeared to be a scuffle between the two.
As Voight tried to save Sean’s life, Upton just stood by and watched. According to showrunner Gwen Sigan, Upton’s decision not to help was a culmination of the journey she’d been on, with Halstead leaving and her focusing on this sensitive case.
“She’s just found that truck that had 12 young girls inside of it… She’s sat in interview room after interview room listening to these girls tell her what’s happened to them, and she has allowed herself to get so close with this man and understand how his mind works and knows that he is not ever going to change, that he has made this justifiable in his mind,” the P.D. boss explains.
Upton was ready to let him die — Sean ultimately survived — and Voight only interfered to save the detective’s conscience. “For Voight, it was knowing that she couldn’t live with that,” Sigan notes. “That might be a momentary decision and an instinctual decision, but [she] wakes up in the morning and she’s going to regret that and she’s not going to be able to stomach it. We’ve seen that before.”
Now that the case is over, Upton will have to confront feelings she’d been ignoring thus far. “She does have a difficult path ahead, and the reality of that path is that with the distraction gone, you are left with the state that your life is in, and it hasn’t changed,” Sigan says.
“Her husband’s gone, her partner’s gone. She’s living in the house they shared together. She can’t get a hold of him. She doesn’t know when he’s coming back,” she adds. “There are all of these things that she has to deal with now, and there’s nothing to distract her from it. So that’s really the path for her moving forward. Can she look it in the eye? When will she look it in the eye, and what will it actually mean for her going forward when she does?”
What did you think of Chicago P.D.‘s midseason finale?
An anticlimactic end to Detective Uppity’s yearly mood swing. No doubt by January she will be back to being her insufferably self righteous self and will flip flop when it comes to her next murder victim preaching ethics she does not have. Voight for all the things he has done at least has consistency and doesn’t deny who and what he is. Blondie didn’t lose any sleep for killing Darrius Walker, Roy Walton she suddenly becomes a jittery mess and now with Sean she was willing to let him die on the floor. Good thing Voight didn’t enable her demands remembering he had the Sergeant stripes. I really miss Chicago PD and wish it wasn’t cancelled for ‘Hailey and her lackeys’
How did I know Dean would be on here, as usual, complaining about Upton. Dude, seriously, how did Tracey hurt you? Did she turn you down when you asked her to Senior Prom or something?
Why is she your secret half sister that you need to defend her atrocious acting of a character that gets second billing over the others that have been there for ten years?
What are you babbling about… Sounds like an issue with strong women
I have issues with terrible poor written characters regardless of their gender. And stow the faux feminism I’ve seen you bash Burgess as much as I rag on Upton. Favortism is not feminism. But you will stay silent becuse someone poked holes in your buased logic and Upton will keep getting a pass for her entitlemenr in your eyes only because she was half of an overrated ship if Voight was the 5ft blonde you’d be using every excuse in the book defending him. I even listed examples but I guess like Upton you pick and choose what is applicable to you only. Everyone else be damned.

Wow, dude, you’ve got some serious issues. Every episode you are on here complaining about Upton. You need to seek some therapy.
Clearly the bias to Hailey runs deep on this site cuz my usual handle won’t post. Simple is Hailey Upton is the worst written TV character of all time. If this was Voight people would be up in arms about how ‘unethical’ he is yet Upton is always flip flopping when it comes to street justice.
The finally was phenomenal.Great acting
Wow. I’m so happy i did not miss the show.

Wow I don’t like Upton much either but these comments are brutal
I was glued to tv! Quite a shocker since I didn’t read spoiler alert. Please don’t get rid ofUpton. We’ve lost enough good characters starting with Olinsky. Stop already!
I’ve never gotten past her setting up Darius walker to be murdered by that gang.
How about her being so zealous about that poor intellectually disabled guy and pursuing him unfairly that he killed himself. How about Upton and Voight hiding the fact that Roy is dead and not giving a damn that burgess is still scared that Roy could come after her.
You can talk all you want about her conscience coming back to haunt her.
THAT WOMAN TRULY HAS NO CONSCIENCE.
Tired of the Hailey hour.
simply dont watch it if youre tired of it? Theres multiple characters on the show therefore they are all going to have storylines, it’s not fair for you to sit behind your screen and bash Hailey. She didnt choose to kill Roy now did she? That storyline has popped back up again after Burgess’ last centric so I’m sure we will hear more on that. But lets not comment hate against Hailey for doing her job!
Because she is the one vile character in a cast of somewhat decent characters despite their personality defects. No one else can get substantial story plots so long as Detective Moody continues to suck up screen time. Hell she thinks she’s boss over Voight barking orders to him like a dog. And she is the one who has been on the team less than everyone else aside from Torres.
No hate involved. Did you see the word hate? I love the show. Just don’t like that she’s judge, jury and executioner. Just like Voight.
Where can I watch the Chicago trio of PD, Fire and Med? Lived these but can’t find them now.
Nbc, the peacock app and I think Hulu.
I also dont like the Upton character. She has no conscience and is always acting high and mighty knowing shes always ”right”. I wont miss her if she gets off’d in the future.
Agree..I stopped watching any episode that features the Upton character. She is terrible and adds nothing to the show.
Used to love CPD, not so much now. More Burzek would be interesting. Expansion of Atwater’s role, stop shuffling actors. Bring back a few in cameo roles. More Voight n Trudy working together. Less Upton plz!
I love these shows
I thought that it was murder/suicide with Chief O’Neil taking his son’s life and then his own.
I thought that too! Shocked to see Sean in jail and in the episode on January 18
I always found it quite typical of people who want to be big bad and down to do anything, but when it comes time to actually put action behind the attitude and words, they crumble and turn into a straight up disaster. I’m not an Upton fan.. at all. She’s everything that makes it that much harder for females like myself to earn the respect of those around her.
I love this show
Upton is my favourite
