DETROIT (WWJ) – We’re a week into meteorological winter, and forecasters in Metro Detroit are fittingly calling for snow this weekend.

But how much can we expect?

AccuWeather meteorologist John Feerick tells WWJ on “Weather Wednesday” while we might see some accumulation, you won’t need to break out the snow blowers just yet.

“It’s looking like the majority of the area’s probably not gonna see a whole lot later Friday into Friday night,” he said. “Certainly as you head west of Metro Detroit, that’s where we’re more likely to see some accumulating snow.”

Feerick says “generally, we’re talking about a coating to an inch,” but some spots further west could be close to 2-3 inches of wet snow.

He told WWJ’s Brooke Allen her kids likely won’t need to get out their snow pants for Friday’s snow, but there is another system coming behind it Saturday night into Sunday morning.

“That has the potential to produce another small accumulation of snow,” Feerick said. “It doesn’t look like a big storm or anything like that, but it certainly could cause some slippery travel Saturday night into Sunday morning.”

As for the snowfall so far this season, Feerick says mild temperatures have kept us right about average. The average total for November is 2 inches, and we saw about 2.5 inches last month, but nothing yet in December.

“December, things do ramp up. Our average snowfall in December is about 9 inches or so, so we’re pretty close to average, but if we don’t get any snow soon, certainly we’re gonna start to fall behind,” Feerick said.

Feerick expects some mild air to move in next week and “wouldn’t be shocked” if temperatures approached the low 50s.
