In 2016, Seth Rogen and company unleashed the adult animated comedy "Sausage Party" onto unsuspecting movie audiences worldwide. Now the grocery gang is back for another round of raunchy adventures in the television medium with "Sausage Party: Foodtopia." Released in 2016, "Sausage Party" tells the story of a hot dog named Frank (voiced by Seth Rogen) who aims to uncover and reveal the truth to the other grocery store food items about their existence and the true intentions that humans have for them. The film would become the first ever R-rated 3D animated film (via CBC) and became the highest-grossing R-rated animated film ever, topping the record previously held by "South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut" holding the record until 2020's "Demon Slayer: Mugen Train" was released (via The New Yorker). What is the release date for Sausage Party: Foodtopia?
"Sausage Party: Foodtopia" is planned to be released in 2024, according to a tweet by the adult animated series' co-creator Seth Rogen. While The Hollywood Reporter does not report the date, it lets us know that the show's first season will premiere on Amazon Prime and contain eight episodes. Commenting on the show's release onto the platform, Vernon Sanders, head of global television for Amazon Studios, says, "The original 'Sausage Party' was an incredibly hilarious, outrageous, one-of-a-kind entry into the world of animation. We are thrilled to collaborate again with Seth, Evan, their team at Point Grey, and our partners at Annapurna Television and Sony Pictures Television to offer a new look into this world that will be brought to life so vividly for our global Prime Video customers."
While it may seem that developing the show has taken an absurd amount of time following the 2016 film, it's nothing compared to Seth Rogen's initial troubles in getting the film picked up. In an interview with Variety, the "This Is the End" director explains his eight-year struggle to get the movie financed. "It was finding someone to agree to say, 'Yes, I will give you money to make that movie,'" he says. "That was really hard." While it would be the exact same amount of time between the film and the show's release, it was likely a far easier sell.
What is the plot of Sausage Party: Foodtopia?
The Hollywood Reporter currently describes the plot of "Sausage Party: Foodtopia" as " ... being kept firmly under wrappers." Despite the vagueness of the show's premise, series creators Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, whose company Point Grey Pictures produced the 2016 film the show is based on, describe their motivation behind the show's making and what we can expect from it. "Film used to be the superior art form to television, and we humbly reached the pinnacle of what can be achieved with film in our remarkable opus, 'Sausage Party,'" the producers state. "But now that film is completely dead, and TV is the forever-king of entertainment, we've decided to continue the epic adventures of our culinary crew in the soon-to-be-legendary televised masterpiece 'Sausage Party: Foodtopia.' It's got all the heart, double the puns, and triple the food-on-food sex. In other words, it's exactly what the world needs right now."
The original "Sausage Party" ends on an ultra meta note where our heroes enter a portal that shows them a glimpse into a new dimension where they see famous real-life actors who provide their voices. Along with, quite literally, opening a new world of possibilities for the show, "Sausage Party" is renowned for its social commentary on the flawed nature of belief systems, so it's likely that the show will explore touchy subjects. If there's anything to expect from "Sausage Party," it's the unexpected.
Who will star in Sausage Party: Foodtopia?
Being a Seth Rogen production, 2016's "Sausage Party" saw his usual roster of comedic talent join the adult animated comedy. Many are scheduled to return to their roles for the upcoming Amazon Prime series "Sausage Party: Foodtopia." As per The Hollywood Reporter, fans can expect to hear the voices of Seth Rogen as Frank, Kristen Wiig as Brenda, Michael Cera as Barry, David Krumholtz as Kareem Abdul Lavash, and Edward Norton as Sammy Bagel Jr. There will also be new characters voiced by the likes of Sam Richardson, Yassir Lester, Will Forte, and Natasha Rothwell. However, some notable cast members from the first film have yet to be announced to join the cast, including Salma Hayek as Teresa del Taco, Jonah Hill as Carl James Franco as the bath salt-injecting drug addict, and Paul Rudd as the store's manager.
Much of the creative team behind the first movie is also set to return. Rogen and Evan Goldberg are set to be executive producers alongside showrunners Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter, all of whom wrote the original film.
