Bengals running back Joe Mixon a full participant at Wednesday practice

Cincinnati Bengals' Joe Mixon (28) runs during the first half of a game against the Miami Dolphins.

CINCINNATI, Ohio — Bengals running back Joe Mixon appears to be nearing a return to game action, as he logged his first full practice with the team Wednesday since he suffered his concussion against the Steelers on Nov. 20.

His practice status would indicate that he has cleared concussion protocol and is on track to play Sunday against the Browns. Coach Zac Taylor will address the media again on Friday.

Mixon has rushed for 605 yards on 158 attempts this season (3.8 yards per carry) with six touchdowns. In his last full game, he rushed for 153 yards and totaled five touchdowns against the Panthers.

In Mixon’s absence, however, Samaje Perine has carried the load to the tune of 194 yards on 49 carries with four total touchdowns. Last week against the Chiefs, Perine put up 106 yards on the ground.

“Samaje, again, you talk about consistency, so it’s so critical to have guys like that on the team that whatever you ask them to do, you know that they’re gonna understand what you’re asking, and they’re gonna do it to their full potential,” Taylor said. “Whether it’s in special teams, protection, or catching the football in the backfield, we’ve been getting first- and second-down carries by Samaje. You’re always getting his best in that consistency and that’s what we appreciate.”

Taylor reiterated that Mixon is the team’s starting running back, but it’s clear that Perine’s performance over the last three weeks has warranted a further look at how many reps he should get each week.

If Mixon is indeed available Sunday, the Bengals will have a chance to utilize two running backs that they believe in. And if one carries more of the weight, then that’s a problem they’re willing to live with.
