PEORIA (25 News Now) - 25News was able to catch up with the models during their last run-through rehearsal and shows us what it takes to put on such an extravagant event.

Javier Johnson, the Co-Director of the 3rd Annual Peoria Hair and Fashion Show says, “don’t expect anything. Just sit back and prepare to be wowed.”

This year’s Peoria Hair and Fashion Show is expected to be bigger than before.

“Our theme this year is giving extravagance anyways. It’s old Hollywood, so we have some pieces with gloves. We have some gaudy big jewelry, some timeless beauty pieces,” explains Victoria Mikell, this year’s modeling coach and the event’s Co-Director.

“They should expect to have a show, a performance, nonetheless. It’s always been a little different from your traditional fashion shows. We like to throw some theatrically in there and just some music and performance.”

Ahead of Sunday’s show, the models are breaking in their heels and going through their last trial runs.

The practice is important to the event because, for many of the models, this is their first time on a stage this size.

“That is something that’s different about this show. We’re incorporating some of the kids because they want to be models too,” says Johnson.

One of this year’s stylists coming to the show is Springfield Loctician Tierra Wilson who went viral on TikTok for a 10-year loc transformation.

“On TikTok, I have over 10 million views,” Wilson says having this opportunity is bigger than social media for the natural hair community, “I just want to show what I can do with my creativity and what I can bring on just doing locks and natural hair.”

Mikell says, “the hair show is an opportunity for them to be creative and do something bigger and more extravagant than what will be a normal style. It really gives them the opportunity to be from behind their chair and be the centerpiece and be on the stage to show their skills.”

This year’s theme is Mirror, Mirror On The Wall, an ode to self-transformation and self-reflection, something Victoria Mikell says she sees in the models during rehearsals.

“It’s about self-reflection. It’s about self-love. It’s about confidence and I’ve seen these young ladies and young men through this process being very shy and timid and now they got their gowns on and they’re ready to go.”
