EATON — On Tuesday, Nov. 22, desserts — both to eat and throw in the faces of two local celebrities — were auctioned off for a good cause at the Preble County Council on Aging’s Senior Center.

“We call this the Don Vaughn Dessert Auction, and we miss him so much. But his wife came up from Alabama today, and she’s sitting right there. And we just appreciate her coming up,” Preble County Senior Center Services Manager Stacy Gibbs said in her welcome.

As is traditional, the event began with the dessert auction, but this year it included a special auction for the opportunity to throw a pie in the face of Sheriff Mike Simpson or State Rep. Rodney Creech. Auctioneer Danny Boggs handled the sale.

The Council on Aging holds a dessert auction each Thanksgiving and Easter in Don Vaughn’s memory.

“It’s to raise funds for our activities department,” PCCOA Executive Director Shelley Ratliff said.

“It’s a way to bring the community in and the best part of it is, we as people who make our Thanksgiving dinners, we don’t have to make our desserts, or the Easter desserts, so it makes it really nice,” Ratliff added.

Vaughn, who passed away in recent years, was one of the center’s veteran pool players, “and was here every day,” Ratliff said. “And then he would be our volunteer auctioneer. He was senior of the year one year. He just helped bring in lots of money for the Senior Center.”

“The neat thing about Don, one year he sold a half of a sandwich that had a bite out of it for $12. He could sell anything,” she added.

Creech and Simpson are the Council on Aging’s biggest supporters in the county, according to Ratliff.

“As the years go on, we’re going to have more seniors and we’re going to have more activities and need more support,” Ratliff said. “And this kind of goes along with that.”

“It’d about bringing the people in, watching them smile because holidays are so stressful. You can tell, everybody’s having a great time,” Ratliff said.

This year’s auction brought in $4,394, which will go toward funding activities at the Senior Center.
