Vape Shops Near Schools Worry Hillsborough Commissioners

TAMPA -- Hillsborough county commissioners vote unanimously to study vape shops at Wednesday's (7th) meeting.

They want to know how many of them are within 500 feet of schools. They've also told staffers to look into ordinances in other parts of Florida, such as Miami Beach, that ban vape shops within 500 feet of any elementary, middle or high school.

Commissioner Ken Hagan says he's glad they're taking on this issue. "Having a 16-year-old daughter, I wholeheartedly support this. The thought of vaping scares the hell out of me."

Speakers told the commission that vaping nicotine has replaced alcohol as the top drug of choice among middle schoolers.
