A Columbus man was sentenced to at least six years in prison following a 2020 vehicular homicide.
Jhuante Burton, 37, was sentenced to a mandatory prison term of six to nine years following his plea to aggravated vehicular homicide, according to the Franklin County prosecuting office.
The incident happened on March 20, 2020.
Police said Burton was driving west on West Broad Street toward Georgesville Road at a high rate of speed. As he approached the line of vehicles stopped at a red light, police said he failed to brake and instead, increased his speed from 55 to 58 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Police said a Dodge Caravan driven by Steven Waits, 64, of Grove City was stopped at a red light in the westbound lane when he was struck from behind. Police said he died at the scene.
According to police, Burton had received methadone treatment immediately prior to driving and had used fentanyl at some point earlier in the day. He was also without a valid driver's license at the time of the crash.
