Fire at McKeesport apartment building forces residents out
REPORTER MARCIE CIPRIANI HAS BEEN ON THAT SCENE FOR HOURS - AND HAS MORE ON THE INVESTIGATION. REPORTER: INVESTIGATORS SAY THE FIRE STARTED IN THE BASEMENT STORAGE AREA BUT THE SMOKE FILLED THE BUILDING QUICKLY AND THOSE INSIDE WERE SCRAMBLING TO ESCAPE. I SPOKE TO NEIGHBOR WHO WAS PUTTING UP CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS AND SAID NNE MAN JUMPED ON TO THE AWNING AND INJURED HIMSELF. HE SAYS HE ANS OTHERS HELPED HIM DOWN FIRST THEN OTHERS. >> AND AFTER THAT, THAT IS WHERE THEY WERE. THEY WERE JUMPING OUT OF THERE. BY THAT POINT THERE WAS FOUR OR FIVE OF US. THE OTHER GUY DID THE SAME THING. THERE WAS A BABY AND THE MOTHER. WE TOLD HIM TO HOLD ON. THAT WAS FOUR STORIES HIGH. REPORTER: THE FIRE CHIEF SAYS WHEN THEY ARRIVED THEY WERE ABLE TO GET THE LADDER TO THE MOM AND HER YOUNG CHILD AND RESCUE THEM. ON THE BOTTOM FLOOR LIDDIE RUTHERFORD SAYS SHE WAS GETTING READY TO TAKE A SHOWER WHEN SHE REALIZED HER BUILDING WAS ON FIRE. >> I SMELLED SMOKE AND I CAME OUT AND THERE WAS NO SMOKE IN MY APARTMENT, BUT I COULD SMELL THE SMOKE AND THE NEXT THING I KNEW SOMEONE WAS BANGING ON MY DOOR AND SAID THE APARTMENT WAS ON FIRE. I GRABBED AS MUCH AS I COULD AND GOT OUT. REPORTER: THE FIRE MARSHAL IS NOT INVESTIGATING AND ITS UNCLEAR WHEN RESIDENTS

Several people were forced out of a McKeesport apartment building when a fire broke out Wednesday afternoon.Watch the breaking news report from McKeesport in the video above.Investigators say the fire started in a basement storage area at the building in the 1000 block of Hartman Street, but smoke filled the apartment quickly and several people escaped through their windows."There was no smoke in my apartment, but I could smell the smoke. The next thing I knew, someone was banging on my door and said the apartment was on fire, get out, so I grabbed as many things as I could and got out," Liddie Rutherford said.Tony Oto said he and other neighbors ran to help people get out of the building. The fire chief said that when firefighters arrived, they were able to use a ladder to rescue a woman and a young child.The Red Cross responded to provide assistance. It's unclear when residents will be allowed back into their apartments.The Allegheny County fire marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
