The FBI said Wednesday that it arrested a Rhode Island man accused of participating in the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol.
The Boston Division said William Cotton, 53, of Hopkinton, was charged with entering a restricted building, disorderly conduct, and parading, demonstrating, or picketing in a Capitol building.
Investigators said someone with personal knowledge of Cotton identified in photos and videos.
Some members of the community expressed relief at his arrest.
"I love it," said one Hopkinton resident. "I hope they get them all."
Others feel the arrests are uncalled for.
"I think they should all be freed," said Michael McDonough of Richmond. "Maybe some who committed violence should get some punishment, but the majority should be free."
The FBI said Cotton is the third Rhode Islander charged by the Boston Division in connection with the riot.
The others are Bernard Sirr of North Kingstown, who was arrested in June, and Timothy Desjardins of Providence, who was charged in November 2021. Their cases continue to work through the courts.
According to the criminal complaint, Cotton was identified through publicly available images and video taken at the Capitol during the insurrection.
The documents say Cotton was standing and moving with a crowd in the general area of the Senate Wing.
The FBI said it had no further comment because it was an ongoing investigation.
