Laura Kemnitz showcased on 1940 Christmas parade float

Christmas parades have certainly changed over the years! While we have trucks and floats covered in lights and modern pomp and circumstance, years ago, they looked certainly different.

Perry resident Laura Kemnitz was showcased on a Lucien float in 1940. The article, published in the Dec. 2, 1940 edition of the PDJ, reads as follows: “The Lucien school float won the $20 cash prize for the best float entered in the school division of the parade held Saturday in connection with formal opening of the Christmas shopping season in Perry.

Lucien entered the only school float in the parade, although other schools previously had indicated that they would take part in that division of the contest.”
