Four suspects have been charged with aggravated robbery, felony vandalism and evading arrest in Tennessee after robbing a business, police said.
This comes in the wake of five similar incidents in Tennessee and Arkansas with losses totaling more than $1.5 million, one of the crimes happening just a month prior at a Macy's at the same mall.
Police part of the "Not in Our Mall" operation were called to the scene of a crime in progress at a Jared Jewelers in Franklin on Saturday.
Franklin Police said a man had walked into the store wearing a hoodie, a hat and a surgical mask. After seeing the man was also wearing sunglasses, a store employee proceeded to call police.
Simultaneously, undercover police close by identified the suspect, who was fleeing the scene in a van with several others in tow, and proceeded to pursue him.
After the getaway man drove the vehicle into a fire lane at the storefront JCPenney at Cool Springs Galleria, police said they saw four masked suspects depart from the van and dart into the establishment.
The driver of the car waited outside for his associates. As officers were at the scene, they were able to arrest him.
In the meantime, the other suspects busted open glass cases with sledgehammers and stole diamond jewelry from the store, all while customers and employees were at the scene.
While the other suspects were stealing diamond jewelry, at the same time, one suspect attacked an employee with pepper spray, according to police.
Police said one of the men attempted to steal an officer's gun as the detective arrested him.
One suspect pepper-sprayed an employee during the robbery. Another suspect fought an officer who interrupted the in-progress robbery, actually trying to grab the gun of the officer who was arresting him.
Three of the men involved in the crime tried to leave the scene while the two arrests were taking place. More officers arrived and were able to arrest two of them.
Detectives are looking for the last suspect who successfully fled the scene.
"The message really here to the community is we want them to feel safe, we want them to feel protected," said Lt. Charlie Warner with Franklin Police Department. "The message to bad guys is we want them to feel very precarious and coming to Franklin is a danger to you."
Police are collaborating with detectives from several agencies to figure out if the Franklin suspects in custody are the men behind the other five mirroring incidents across Tennessee and Arkansas.
One of the similar crimes also happened at the Cool Springs Galleria, but at Macy's, on Nov. 4.
One of the suspects, Dunterious Traylor, the man seen fighting police in the video, is charged for assault on a first responder as well.
All four men arrested are currently in jail.
Warner said the department started the mall operation years ago, establishing close relationships to nearby retailers and allowing them to bypass 911 to call officers directly. He added that they've made more than 34 arrests just this year under the operation, recovering more than $7,300 worth of stolen goods.
