Employees at a school district in Maryland can expect some extra pocket cash ahead of the Christmas holiday.
Anne Arundel County Public Schools is giving its employees a bonus of $1,000 on Dec. 16, intended as an Employee Appreciation Bonus that received the full backing of the Board of Education. The bonus will be pro-rated based on an employee’s full-time equivalency and will be delivered to all permanent employees aside from any who are on leave of absence by Dec. 16, according to the AACPS district.

“No school system can be great without great people,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mark Bedell wrote in a letter to AACPS staff. “As I have said before, the work you are doing in the face of some stiff challenges is incredible. No matter your role in our school system, our students benefit every day from your dedication and passion. Please don’t ever forget that.”
Bedell himself will not accept the bonus.
The bonuses will be funded from the money AACPS saved from vacancies it experienced across the school system. Due to this, the school district will not need to ask for any additional funding to cover these bonuses.

Additionally, employees were also informed of a healthcare premium holiday on Dec. 28, in which no healthcare premiums will be deducted from employee’s pay on that day. This holiday is taking place thanks to the level of the school system’s healthcare fund balance.
“I fully realize that the bonus is a small gesture of appreciation,” Bedell said. “However, it is critically important to me and to the Board of Education that we continue to find ways to simply say ‘Thank You.’”
