The Grants High School Pirates made a game out of their road trip to Taos last Friday, December 2, as they were within four points with 3:54 in the fourth quarter. They just were unable to seal the deal as the Tigers, who are ranked 67th in the New Mexico Overtime Sports coaches poll, were able to claw their way to a 68-55 victory to stay 2-0. “We got out to a slow start, 18-3, at the end of the first quarter—-we found ways to make runs throughout the game,” said Grants Head Coach Landon Chavez. “Daemon Ely [of Taos] was the xfactor in the game with 32 points, 12 rebounds and 11 blocks.”

The Pirates, who trailed throughout the game were reenergized at half time, “At halftime, I wanted us to continue pressuring the guards – who finished with 33 turnovers — I emphasized executing the offensive sets,” said Chavez.

The Pirates will play the Pecos Panthers (2-0) on Thursday, December 8 at the Capital High School. “Pecos is very quick and they press the entire game—our defense will determine how well we compete,” said Chavez.

The Lady Pirates lost their season opener on the road last week on Tuesday, November 29, by a score of 49-41. “We’re just working out the rust – I think going into the next game we know what we need to focus on and will perform better,” said Grants High School Lady Pirates head coach Douglas “Dougie” Hickman. Next up for the Lady Pirates will be another tough road game to the four corners against the 4-0 Kirtland Central Broncos. “That will be a tough game,” said Hickman.
