Officers will now accept digital vehicle registration, proof of insurance

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Law enforcement officers in Washington state will now accept a digital copy of your car registration and proof of insurance on your phone.

That means you do not have to keep the originals and the personal information they contain in the vehicle.

Some have asked whether the new rule would allow an officer to take your phone and scan through it if you are pulled over.

But a King County Sheriff’s spokesman tells KIRO that they will not do that.

Officers do not want to take control of a person’s phone and risk dropping and cracking it.

And state search and seizure laws protect citizens and the information on their digital devices.
