Overnight standoff originating in Mankato leads to I-35 closure, 1 arrest

(KSTP) – A stretch of I-35 in the Elko New Market reopened early Wednesday morning following an overnight standoff that forced northbound lane closures, the Rice County Sheriff’s Office told our sister station, KSTP.

The sheriff’s office says the standoff, which led to the arrest of one person, was in connection to a “custodial kidnapping.”

Authorities have not released any information about the person in custody or the events leading up to the alleged kidnapping.

Everyone involved is okay, according to the sheriff.

When the standoff was ongoing, Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT) cameras showed a large law enforcement presence, which led to the nearly 2-hour interstate closure that ended around 2 a.m.

KSTP says the incident began in Mankato after police issued a “be on the lookout” alert.

ABC 6 News will provide more information when it becomes available.
