Health officials are urging anyone able to get a flu shot to do so, after seeing an uptick in flu cases across the country.
According to medical professionals in Craven County, this flu season started several weeks earlier than normal, with cases dating as far back as October.
Dr. Anna Baird with ‘Realo Drugs’ said they have seen an increased number of patients with Tamiflu prescriptions this year. Tamiflu is an antiviral drug that works by attacking the flu virus and keeps it from multiplying inside the body while also reducing symptoms of the flu. Tamiflu is not available without a prescription.
Baird said increased demand, coupled with an overall drug shortage, is making 2022 a challenging year for pharmacists.
According to Pediatrician Dr. Ronald May at CarolinaEast Medical Center, the flu numbers started early several weeks ago, long before we would typically see the flu season.
"Usually, the flu surges come after Christmas. January, February sometimes they occur before then, but this started October, November. So, it's very, very early."
Most area doctor's offices and pharmacies have flu shots available.
Dr. May said he sees the flu in young and older patients this year, so health experts recommend everyone get the shot.
