Quarterbacks lead senior football players into 32nd annual Alex Spanos Classic

Aleks Wojcik, a 3,000-yard passer for Mar Vista this season, leads a pack of talented QBs who will play for the North and South in Saturday’s 4 p.m. game at Mira Mesa High.

Quarterbacks figure to be in the spotlight Saturday afternoon as part of the 32nd annual Alex Spanos Classic — the longest-running high school football all-star game in California — kicks off at 4 p.m. at Mira Mesa High.

Aleks Wojcik, who threw for 3,021 yards and 36 TDs for Mar Vista, Johnny Mosti of Morse, who threw for 2,569 yards, and Madison’s versatile Reggie Johnson, who threw for 1,760 yards, headline the South roster.

Connor Underhill of Rancho Buena Vista, who threw for 1,874 yards, Owen Tsay of Maranatha Christian, who threw for 2,668 yards and 25 TDs, and Damian Rodriguez of Central Union, who threw for 1,888 yards, lead the North.

Saturday: 4 p.m., Mira Mesa HS

Tickets: $10 adults, $5 seniors and ages 6-12. Under 5 free. Tickets can be purchased at GOFAN or cash only at the site.

In addition, the South roster includes running backs Kal-el Gordan of El Cajon Valley and Makei Thompson of Mira Mesa as well as receiver Quincy Herron of Helix.

On defense, linebackers Chase Lowary of Point Loma and Puka Noa of Helix along with defensive back Austin Cordiero of El Capitan lead the South.

The North roster includes versatile Chris Williams of Francis Parker, RB Santiago Salas of Mission Hills and receivers Tate Reid of El Camino and Aiden Volk of Escondido Charter on offense.

The defense is loaded, paced by linemen Cassius Murphy of Carlsbad and Nick Driscoll of Ramona, LBs Peter DeCelles of San Pasqual and Wes Hoehner of Rancho Bernardo and DB Brandon Worsley of Mission Hills.

The North won 35-6 last season and leads the series 15-11 since the game went to a North-South format in 1994.
