Officials from Maine 211 say they've received more than 20,000 calls from Mainers this year with concerns about fuel and heating assistance, a 190% increase from last year. 211 is a free, confidential information and referral service that connects people across Maine to local services. It's a collaborative effort of the United Ways of Maine, the state, the Department of Health and Human Services and the Opportunity Alliance. Program manager Nikki Williams says there are workers answering calls all day, seven days a week. You can also text your zip code to 898-211 to find services in your area. The Keep ME Warm Fund is the only state-wide fuel assistance fundraising effort that provides heating assistance to those in need.WMTW and Partners Bank are raising money for the fund through their Heat Week fundraiser.
