Lincoln Public Schools hosts equity and inclusion day

LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN) – Students from across Lincoln Public Schools gathered Tuesday for an equity and inclusion day.

The main goal was for students to be advocates for equity and inclusion when they go back to their school and home.

“Many of our greatest social, I don’t want to say changes, but successes have come on the backs and from the feats and the steps of young people,” said Peter Ferguson, coordinator of culture, inclusion and scholar development at LPS.

This was the fifth year for the event, and this year, organizers also invited students from Westside Community Schools in Omaha to participate.

During the day, students heard from a variety of speakers and took part in various discussions throughout the day.

In total, about 70 students with different backgrounds attended the daylong event.

Roshan Ibrahim, a junior at Lincoln East, has been going to this event for the past three years. She can’t wait to go again, calling it “The highlight of my month.”

“A lot of, like, who I am now … it’s because of this and because of, like, what everyone else has helped me, like, find in myself,” she said.

Organizers hope that the addition of Westside is just the start and that students from more districts will come in the future.
