A homicide suspect from the Detroit area is one of two men who were arrested in Gahanna.
On Monday, Gahanna police began investigating a report of domestic violence at Verdin Court. As a result of the investigation, police said an arrest warrant was filed for domestic violence and assault for 39-year-old Labaron Thurmond.
Police also had a search warrant for the Verdin Court residence and determined Thurmond was there with 34-year-old Gayelon Spencer Jr., of Detroit.
Shortly after police arrived to execute the warrant, police said Thurmond left the residence and was taken into custody without incident.
Police said Spencer came out of the residence after several verbal requests and was also detained.
Police searched the home and recovered numerous firearms.
Thurmond is charged with domestic violence and assault.
Police said Spencer had an active warrant for a probation violation in Wayne County, Mich., and is a suspect in a Nov. 27 homicide in Detroit. Police said additional charges were filed against him Tuesday to ensure he is held prior to extradition.
Detroit police said the victim was shot by Spencer after a confrontation regarding an elevator door.
“We are grateful for our law enforcement partners, both in central Ohio and in Michigan, for their assistance in arresting these two individuals,” Gahanna Police Chief Jeff Spence said. “The arrests, along with the recovery of multiple firearms, may have prevented future acts of violence from occurring in central Ohio and beyond.”
