Wednesday marks one year since three people were gunned down while sitting in a car in southeast Columbus in what police called a "targeted assassination."
Charles Wade, 22, Demitrius Wall'neal, 9, and Londynn Wall'neal, 6, were killed on Dec. 7, 2021, when two suspects fired more than 50 rounds into a vehicle they were sitting in.
All three were sitting in a vehicle parked in the Winchester Lakes apartment complex parking lot.
Police said two armed suspects approached the vehicle and opened fire. Both suspects then got into a waiting vehicle, which was driven by a third suspect.
"All of the evidence that we have at the scene indicates that this is not a random act," Columbus Police Det. Terry Kelley said a day after the shooting. "It does appear to be a targeted assassination. There's no other way to say it. The evidence we have at the scene absolutely indicates this was a targeted assassination."
Columbus police provided an update Wednesday morning on the case.
Detective Kelley said progress is being made in the case but he needs a few more things to fall into place to solve it.
Detectives are still working to identify suspects and other people involved in the shooting.
He said between the two gunmen, a driver and a few others, there are about four or five people involved.
Their identities and location are still unknown.
Detective Kelley said he's working on the case every day and he still can't say why this shooting happened.
