JIM: LIFE OR DEATH MOMENTS HEARD ON THE 911 CALLS OF A DEADLY WAREHOUSE FIRE IN ORANGE COUNTY. AND BREAKING NEWS THIS AFTERNOON, WE’VE LEARNED A FOURTH PERSON HAS DIED. SUMMER: ONE PERSON IS STILL IN THE HOSPITAL WITH INJURIES. THE FIRE BROKE OUT LAST WEEK, AT A WAREHOUSE WHERE FIREWORKS WERE STORED. JIM: WESH 2’S MARLEI MARTINEZ JOINS US LIVE WITH THE LATEST ON THE INVESTIGATION. MARLEI? MARLEI: WE HAVE LEARNED FROM THE SHERIFFS OFFICE THAT A FOURTH PERSON HAS DIED. THEY WERE 22 YEARS OLD. >> I’M CALLING TO REPORT A COMMERCIAL FIRE ALARM. >> THERE’S, LIKE, A FIREWORKS EXPLOSION HERE AT 901 CENTRAL FLORIDA PARKWAY. >> IT’S JUST LIKE THE BUILDING EXPLODED. YOU COULD SEE ALL THE FIRE JUST COMING DOWN. IT WAS JUST LIKE A BUNCH OF FIREWORKS. MARLEI: PEOPLE DRIVING BY THIS WAREHOUSE LAST THURSDAY NIGHT, SHOCKED TO SEE FLAMES AND SMOKE ERUPTING FROM THE BUILDING. EMPLOYEES ON THE GROUND, QUICK TO CALL 911. >> WE HAD AN EXPLOSION IN OUR WAREHOUSE, AND WE HAVE MULTIPLE PEOPLE INJURED. >> HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE HURT? >> 1, 2, 3, POSSIBLY 4. 4 OR 5. MARLEI: WE’VE LEARNED THAT A TOTAL OF FIVE EMPLOYEES GOT HURT. FOUR OF THEM HAVE NOW DIED. MARLEI: THE COMPANY SAYS THEY HAD 8 EMPLOYEES THERE AT THE TIME. 5 WERE INSIDE. >> WHERE ARE YOU HURTING? >> EVERYWHERE. HE’S HURTING EVERYWHERE. >> IS HE BURNED, OR IS HE JUST HURTING? >> IT SEEMS THE OUTER LAYER OF HIS SKIN ALL BURNED OFF. MARLEI: MAGIC IN THE SKY SAID THEY ARE COOPERATING WITH THE INVESTIGATION, WHERE THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL, ATF, AND OSHA ARE ALL GATHERING INFORMATION. MEANWHILE, MULTIPLE FAMILIES ARE GRIEVING. THE ORANGE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE SAYS DAVID GONZALEZ, LINDSEY PHILLIPS, AND LANDON BOURLAND ALL DIED. AND NOW ELIZABETH TIRALONGO. THIS, AS ONE MORE PERSON IS STILL IN THE HOSPITAL. IN A STATEMENT, THE COMPANY SAYS, "SAFETY IS, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN, OUR COMPANY’S NUMBER ONE PRIORITY. OUR HIGHLY QUALIFIED PERSONNEL ARE TRAINED ON A REGULAR BASIS IN THE PROCEDURES USED TO PROPERLY HANDLE AND PREP PYROTECHNIC PRODUCTS." WE’RE STILL WAITING TO HEAR BACK FROM THE STATE FIRE MARSHAL. Fourth person dies in Orlando warehouse fire that sparked fireworks
The tragic fire at an Orange County warehouse just keeps getting worse as a fourth person has now died. The Orange County Sheriff's Office says 22-year-old Elizabeth Tiralongo has died from their injuries.People driving by Central Florida Parkway last Thursday were shocked to see flames and smoke erupting from one of the warehouses in the industrial area and were quick to call 911.“It’s just like the building exploded. You could see all the fire just coming down. It was just like a bunch of fireworks,” said one 911 caller.The fire ignited at the fireworks storage unit for the company Magic in the Sky. One of the employees who was there also called 911.“We had an explosion in our warehouse. And we have multiple people injured,” he said.In a statement, the company said a total of eight employees were there at the time, and five were inside the warehouse. Ultimately, Magic in the Sky said five of their employees got hurt and four of those people injured have since died.The company said it is cooperating with the investigation where the state fire marshal, ATF and OSHA are all gathering information.Meanwhile, multiple families are grieving. David Gonzalez, 22, Lindsey Phillips, 23, and Landon Bourland, 24, all died from their injuries according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. One more person is still in the hospital.In part of the company statement, Magic in the Sky said: “Safety is, and always has been, our company’s number one priority. Our highly qualified personnel are trained on a regular basis in the procedures used to properly handle and prep pyrotechnic products for the entertainment productions that we produce.”The company said it will conduct its own review and release its findings to the public.
