Groundbreaking held for new Davis Creek Elementary

CABELL COUNTY, W.Va. (WSAZ) – Cabell County Schools broke ground on a 2020 bond funded project Tuesday that will build a new Davis Creek Elementary.

In August 2020, Cabell County residents voted in favor of a bond that would help the school system pay for a new Davis Creek Elementary, Meadows and Milton Elementary schools.

The new elementary school is being built in Barboursville off U.S. 60.

“It’s a beautiful campus. There’s lots of land and the current school doesn’t have that,” said Dr. Ryan Saxe, superintendent of Cabell County Schools.

Saxe acknowledged the current school is prone to flooding issues.

Davis Creek Elementary set to reopen March 29

“There are teachers’ and students’ artifacts of learning, and those get destroyed and those are memories. We want to avoid that,” Saxe said.

The new elementary school will be all on one floor featuring various outdoor classrooms.

“The ability for the students to have their own dedicated art and music classroom. They’re going to be able to have do student performances with a retractable stage,” Saxe said.

Davis Creek is also among the schools that will be involved in the county’s redistricting plan.

A spokesperson for Cabell County Schools said phase two of the redistricting will begin after Davis Creek Elementary opens.

The school plans to open for the 2024-2025 school year.
