West New York woman in critical condition after being struck crossing North Bergen street

A West New York woman is in critical condition and another person was also hospitalized when they were struck by an SUV while trying to cross a side street off Tonnelle Avenue in North Bergen Monday night, authorities said.

North Bergen police responded to the four-lane state roadway at the 83rd Street intersection at 8:42 p.m. and found the 63-year-old woman and a 72-year-old Brooklyn, New York man injured in the crosswalk, North Bergen police Capt. David Dowd said.

The New York man suffered a head injury, but was alert, while the West New York woman was unconscious and bleeding from a head injury.

The driver of the SUV, a 38-year-old Virginia man, told police he was traveling north on Tonnelle Avenue and stopped in the left-hand lane at the intersection and was preparing to turn left onto 83rd Street, Dowd said. As he was turning, he did not see the pedestrians crossing 83rd Street and struck them.

Both victims were transported to the Hackensack University Medical Center. The New York man was discharged Tuesday morning, while the 63-year-old woman remains in critical condition.

No summonses or charges were filed against the driver, but the crash remains under investigation by the North Bergen Police Department Traffic Unit, Dowd said.

Three people have died in crashes on Tonnelle Avenue in the township so far in 2022.
