The Progress
The Bonanza High School girls basketball team ran into a buzzsaw named Virgin Valley on Monday night, Nov. 28 as they were overmatched 61-20 by their hosts.
Virgin Valley led 17-4 after one period as their defense controlled the ball. Six Bulldogs scored in the period led by seniors Riley Price and Brooklin Montoya with 5 and 4 points respectively.
The Bulldogs cruised through the second period outscoring the Bengals 18-10 to take a 35-14 lead at the half. Bulldogs Natalie Isidro and Evia Toone had four points each to lead the Dawgs.
The Bulldogs continued their man-to-man press to open the second half. This resulted in a 47-17 lead, four minutes into the third period.
Then Bulldog Coach Cliff Hughes pulled out his starting five giving his second squad the opportunity to gain experience. Even so, the Bulldog girls did not let up as they held the Bengals to 3 points the rest of the way. Price finished the game with 13 points. Guards Reggi Frei and Ashley Angiano had 8 points each. Ten Bulldogs made the scorebook.
“For the first game of the season I felt it was a good performance by the team,” said Coach Hughes. “We used 12 different players and they all contributed. I think we’re going to have a well-balanced team which will help us as the season progresses.”
