Northern Oklahoma College presented their rendition of Dolly Parton’s “9 to 5: The Musical” from Dec. 1 through 4. In the Kinzer Performing Arts Center, the cast and crew of Northern Oklahoma College’s music department always works their hardest to bring a stellar performance to the surrounding communities. “9 to 5” is no different in this aspect.

Directed by NOC Fine Arts Instructor, Chad Anderson, “9 to 5: The Musical” was an exceptional display of talent by both the director and the cast and crew for this musical. The actors and actresses played their characters to perfection.

“I love these screen-tostage adaptations. I enjoy seeing characters’ thoughts put to song and dance. I like discovering changes (And often, improvements) to classic stories. Mostly, I enjoy witnessing our students learn about something of which they were previously unaware. ‘9 to 5’ has been no exception,” says Director, Chad Anderson.

“9 to 5” was based on the 1980 film of the same name and contained music and lyrics from none other than a queen of country music, Dolly Parton, and screen play written by Patricia Resnick and Collin Higgins.

This musical is centered around three women, Violet (Mallory Kyler), Judy (Regan Clapper), and Doralee (Kira Pendleton), as they navigate the issues of being secretaries in the 1970s. The three work at Consolidated Industries, run by the sexist and debauched Franklin Hart. Between the trails of finding confidence in themselves and earning the respect of others, the three women learn that all they need is themselves to better not only the company, but their lives as well.

After defeating their boss and proving that they are far more competent, they all seemingly get the life they dreamed of by the end. With a secret performance by NOC’s President, Dr. Clark Harris, shocking twists and turns, and a hilarious plot, the musical succeeded in keeping the audience on their toes.

“Thank you for supporting these kids and NOC Theatre,” said Director Anderson.
