The Mitchell City Council on Monday approved a grant application for a recycling distribution center transfer station to centralize garbage and recycling.  The station will be located at the current Mitchell Regional Landfill off of Highway 38.  The former recycling location is at the old landfill.

The price tag for the project is nearly $2.7 million.  Grant money could reduce the city’s share of that by around 30 percent.  The money for the project is included in the 2023 city budget, which was approved last month.

Schroeder said that the city of Mitchell and its residents have stepped up recycling efforts and have surpassed Yankton in the amount of recyclables collected by Millennium Recycling.  He added that because of how clean the material is, rates will not be raised.  He gave kudos to city residents and the city employees who sort the recycling.

Schroeder told the council that the project is nearly ready to bid.
