Mahoning County Fire Chiefs Association gathered Friday for its annual meeting and Christmas Party at Sebring Mansion Inn and Spa.

Sebring Fire Chief Mike Springer, also the association treasurer, planned the event, which also honored late Sebring Fire Chief Jim Cannell, who died in July. Members shared stories about Cannell and his various contributions to the association, local fire education and his community.

Springer announced the officers will remain the same for the upcoming year. Todd Baird, Green Township Fire chief, will remain president. Vice President is J.R. Warren, chief of Coitsville Fire; and secretary is Larry Sauerwein, Beaver Township Fire chief.

“I’d like to thank the officers for helping make the golf outing a success,” said Baird. “All the guys have been phenomenal.”

Baird cited some area fire departments that in the recent election had levies pass, and 13 departments that received grants. Money raised by the association is used for continuing education, including the annual symposium planned in 2023 on May 6-7 at Mahoning County Careet and Technical Center in Canfield.

“Training is crucial in the fire and EMS business,” Springer added.

Winners of a gun raffle were drawn, and first place was J.R. Warren. Second place was Austin Gebhardt, and Shirleen Hughes took third place.

Association membership is open to all past and present Mahoning County fire chiefs and assistant chiefs.
