Warriors star Steph Curry says reaction to edited full-court shot video is ‘ultimate compliment’

SAN FRANCISCO — The video went viral within minutes.

There Stephen Curry was, on the Warriors’ practice court, draining full-court heave after heave. He made five in a row, the Sports Illustrated video shows, before gleefully sprinting out of the gym.

The footage spread like wildfire, accumulating more than 20 million views on Twitter in a day.

The problem? It wasn’t real.

Curry confirmed after Monday night’s loss to the Indiana Pacers that the video was doctored by editor extraordinaire Ari Fararooy, who made similar modified videos for Tom Brady. But the Warriors superstar was quick to point out he did make two of the baskets “just in case anybody was wondering.”

That admission came after he first joked when questioned about the authenticity of the footage.

“Nobody believes I made five in a row from 90 feet?” Curry said.

But that’s the thing. People did believe it, and some on social media refused to accept Curry’s own words Monday night.

The fact that many believe that actions in that video, altered by computer-generated imagery, is something Curry could do is a testament to his greatness.

“It’s an ultimate compliment [for people] to probably be amazed by it but not think it’s outlandish that it could be real,” Curry said. “But we had some fun with it. The Sports Illustrated team coming with some heat.”

Klay Thompson shared his thoughts on the reaction to the video shortly after. He said the overwhelming belief by the general audience that the video could be real shows that Curry is “the greatest to ever shoot it.”

Coach Steve Kerr said he knew it was fake when Curry made five straight shots.

“I thought three in a row, he could do that. But not five in a row,” Kerr said. “It was I think just the fact that it was Steph made people pause and wonder if it was real so that’s all you need to know about Steph, so pretty remarkable.”

Curry might be the greatest shooter of all time, but making five consecutive 90-foot baskets seems improbable, even for him. Or does it?
